Letter from the President

President John Delaney at the library
Providing transformational learning opportunities for students is one of the hallmarks of an education at the University of North Florida.

Whether it is a trip abroad that delves into ancient history or hands-on research outside the classroom, these experiences can be life changing and often impact a student’s career path while broadening their view of the world.

Ten years ago, UNF formalized a grant process to fund some of these dynamic pursuits — elevating the University’s commitment to providing transformational learning opportunities for all students. In this issue of the Journal, you will learn more about TLOs and how they impact our students on a daily basis.

There is no question that transformational learning abounds in our newest college on campus — the Hicks Honors College. The University’s sixth academic college — previously the Honors program — was announced in October. It was made possible through a $7 million gift from long-time UNF supporters Ann and David Hicks. Their generosity is seen across campus and throughout the Northeast Florida community. Both Ann, a UNF alumna, and David are passionate about our students and providing opportunities for them to grow as scholars and as leaders.

Our Honors students are high-achievers who eagerly seek to be challenged. The new College and funding will provide opportunities for in-depth research with faculty, academic competitions, study abroad, interdisciplinary learning and community engagement.

You’ll also read about the new Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations at UNF. Our University’s core values support diversity, mutual respect and civility, and the Institute will provide research and opportunities to address critical issues involving race and human rights. We have worked hard to create a culture of inclusion at UNF, and the Institute will encourage important conversations throughout our campus community.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Homecoming 2016 — it is just around the corner! It’s such a pleasure visiting with our alumni each year during this time, and with a full schedule of events, you’ll have lots of opportunities to reconnect with old friends.

We can’t wait to see you.

Sincerely,

John A. Delaney

President
