The Department of Campus Recreation offers the Youth Sports and Fitness Camp each summer to kids ages 5 to 14, geared towards keeping kids active all summer. Campers will have access to the state-of-the-art Student Wellness Complex and will participate in the climbing wall, yoga, Zumba, indoor track and spinning activities, all designed for fun, fitness and age appropriateness. Each week, campers can expect a weekly sport theme and field trip. Need-based scholarships are available to University students, faculty and staff. Visit the website for an application and more information. Accepted applicants will receive a free week(s) of camp, based on availability. Summer camps begin the week of June 13. Applicants are encouraged to apply soon, before age groups reach capacity.

  • Kids will be able to wait an extra year for VPK: Maureen Mian, director of the Child Development Resource Center, spoke with WJCT as part of its continuing series "Lessons Learned Early."
  • Shark researchers move closer to Jacksonville beaches: Shark Biology Program Director Dr. Jim Gelsleichter moved his annual shark survey's focus closer to the beach this year and discussed his research with Action News.
  • Professor receives Fulbright Award: Dr. Joshua Gellers, assistant professor of political science, has been awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar Award to conduct research on public participation in the environmental decision-making process in Sri Lanka. He shared what he'll be doing there on WJCT.
  • Alleged gender bias in Hollywood: Dr. JeffriAnne Wilder, assistant professor of sociology, discussed a wide variety of race issues, including alleged gender bias against female film directors in Hollywood on "The Chat."

The NCAA Track and Field event begins Thursday, May 26, and continues through Saturday, May 28, and will impact traffic, parking and shuttle routes as follows:

  • North Entrance Road, located in between Lot 18 and Hodges Stadium, Building 46: Temporarily closed 7 a.m. Monday, May 23 until 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, for the staging of additional spectator seating and pedestrian safety. Lot 18 will still be accessible from Eco Road, Varsity Lane, and the Central Parkway campus entrance. 
    • Due to the road closure, the shuttle stop located in front of Hodges Stadium will be inaccessible. A temporary stop will be in the west side lot cut out located less than 100-ft. from the closed-off shuttle location.
  • Lot 18: Parking available to accommodate regular campus population and event attendees
  • Lot 5, adjacent to the Tennis Clubhouse, Building 37: Blocked off starting 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 25 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 27, for meet officials and coach parking 
  • Lot 46, adjacent to Hodges Stadium, Building 46: Blocked off starting 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 24 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 27, for the track meet's material storage and event staff
