Stay Safe this Semester

Start Date:
2019-05-13
End Date:
2019-05-26
Headline: Stay Safe this Semester
Description:

In the event of an emergency, the University will use multiple means of communication to notify and update the campus community regarding the nature of a crisis. Means of communication may include social media, text messages, cell phone calls and indoor/outdoor mass communication systems. In the event of an active shooter emergency while in a classroom or other University building, individuals are encouraged to take the actions listed below:

  • RUN: When an active shooter is in your vicinity, if there is an escape path, and it's safe to do so, attempt to evacuate.
  • HIDE: If evacuation isn't possible, find a place to hide.
  • FIGHT: As a last resort, and only if your life is in danger, attempt to incapacitate the shooter.

When law enforcement arrives, remain calm and follow instructions, keep your hands visible at all times, avoid pointing or yelling and know that help for the injured is on the way. When informed to evacuate by emergency personnel, leave all personal effects behind, unless instructed otherwise by emergency personnel. Upon exiting the classroom space, promptly proceed to the location designated by or led to by emergency personnel. Don't re-enter classroom space until directed or given an all-clear by emergency personnel. Visit the Crisis Management website for more information.

It's strongly recommended that students watch a video supplied by the FBI titled "Run, Hide, Fight," via this webpage

In addition, the University Police Department recommends students go to the App Store for Apple products and Google Play Store for Android products and download the free-of-charge app called Safe Ospreys. If prompted, grant permission to receive app notifications. By downloading the app, users will have access to the UNF Alert Feed for emergency notifications and these six safety feature buttons:

  • Mobile BlueLight: Just like the blue emergency phones on campus, this button simultaneously sends your location and calls the dispatchers in the University Police Department.
  • Friend Walk: This allows individuals to send your location in real-time to a friend or parent, so they can monitor as you walk to your destination and trigger a call to emergency services, if needed.
  • Report a Tip: Users can report a tip of unusual or criminal activity to UPD using one of three options—a Tip Report, the Silent Witness program or a call to UPD’s dispatch center.
  • Safety Toolbox: This button reveals a set of tools with directions—Flashlight, Share Map of your location and Notification History.
  • Emergency Plans: Even without internet access, users will be able to view and keep informed of the University’s emergency plans, such as procedures for bomb threats, campus disturbance, hazardous release, fire and facility evacuation.
  • Support Resources: This button offers links to the University’s Counseling Center and Women’s Center.

The University encourages the entire campus community to download and utilize the app as soon as possible.
