Canvas Student Support

    • Assignments – students can view Assignments in their course by accessing the Assignments page; NOTE: Instructors may choose to hide the Assignments link in Course Navigation, and include it elsewhere such as in modules
    • Modules - where the instructor organizes course content; almost like a table of contents for the course with links to specific course content
    • Grades – displays all grades for all course assignments; students can view scoring details, comments, and rubrics in addition to their graded items
    • Conversations – an email like messaging tool used to communicate within a course, with a group, an individual student, a group of students, or an course instructor; students can communicate with other people in their course at any time with this tool
    • Chat - allows students and instructors to interact in real time; available to all students in the course, chats cannot be limited to specific students; chat comments cannot be deleted; all users in the course can access the chat history
    • Discussions - course specific discussion area for enrolled students and course instructors to start and contribute to as many discussion topics as desired; Discussions can also be created as an assignment for grading purposes
    • Conferences - synchronous (real-time) discussions within a course; Conferences allow you to broadcast real-time audio, video, share presentation slides, and share any other online resources; recorded content is available for viewing for 14 days; recorded content cannot be downloaded and saved
    • Collaborations - Google Docs technology which allows up to fifty collaborators to work together on the same document at the same time; Collaborative documents are saved in real-time, meaning a change made by any of its users will be immediately visible to all collaborators; students must have a Google account to use this tool
    • Notifications - Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences a student can receive for their courses via email or Text Message; Notifications are sent to the student as specified in their account; students can change the default settings in notification preferences  
    • Canvas Guides - Public documentation for the Canvas LMS and mobile-related products, Canvas Catalog, and Canvas Commons
  • The Files feature allows students to store various file types (documents, images, videos) within Canvas:
    • Students can upload a single file, multiple files at once, view all details about their files, and preview files using this feature
    • Student file quota is limited to a combined 50MB across Canvas for all courses
    • Uploads submitted for graded assignments are uploaded to your Files, but are not counted against your 50MB quota
    • Once a file has been uploaded as an assignment submission, the student cannot delete that file
    • Files can be uploaded directly from a computer or uploaded from Google Drive (after permission has been granted by the student for Canvas to access their account)
