Faculty-led Study Abroad

Why choose a faculty-led study abroad program?

  • If you do not have a lot of time to spend abroad. Faculty-led Spring Break or May Break trips can be as short as 7 days, and Summer programs range from 1 - 5 weeks.
  • If you haven't been outside the U.S. before. You will travel in a group with a UNF faculty member. The itinerary and most travel plans are pre-arranged.
  • If you want to receive credit for a UNF course while you travel. Most faculty-led programs are associated with at least 3 UNF credits.

General Information and Requirements

  • Waiver and Release for Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

    This Waiver and Release must be printed, completed, signed, and uploaded to the student's Faculty-Led Study Abroad Application in myWings. If the student is under 18 years of age, the Waiver and Release must be signed by the student's parent or legal guardian.

    Waiver & Release & Acknowledgement Form for Faculty-Led Programs

  • Participation Requirements for Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

    Per UNF international travel policies, in order to participate in a UNF Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program, students must complete all of the following requirements within the time prescribed for the specific program:

    1. I agree to obtain all appropriate travel documents (e.g. passport, visa if required).
    2. I agree to complete all required components of the Faculty-Led Study Abroad Application in myWings, including:
      1. Upload a completed & signed Waiver and Release Agreement for Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs to my application.
      2. Upload a clear copy of my signed passport to my application.
      3. Certify that I have watched the UNF Safety Abroad video in its entirety.
    3. I agree to attend all meetings/orientations required by my Faculty Leader and/or the International Center.
    4. I agree that I will pay all required study abroad program costs according to the established payment schedule.
    5. I agree that I will be a currently enrolled UNF student during the term of travel.
    6. I agree that I will register for any required course(s) associated with the program and pay UNF tuition and fees by the required deadlines.
    7. I agree that if I do not accomplish all of the above study abroad requirements, the Faculty Leader or the UNF International Center may cancel my participation in the program, drop me from any associated course(s), and exclude me from any travel with the program participants.
    8. I further agree that the University may review my UNF student conduct history. If such review results in a determination that my involvement in the proposed study abroad program might place either me or others at risk, my participation in the activity may be canceled.
  • Important Study Abroad Financial Information
    1. Program Costs and Payment
      1. I agree that after the acceptance of my myWings Faculty-Led Study Abroad Application, study abroad program charges will be placed on my UNF student account. Those charges are used to pay for study abroad program costs, including but not limited to transportation, lodging, excursions, insurance, & supplies.
      2. I agree that study abroad program costs must be paid in addition to tuition & fees required for any associated course(s).
      3. I agree that I will pay all required study abroad program costs according to the established payment schedule.
      4. I understand that the amounts and due dates of these study abroad program charges are determined in collaboration with non-UNF service providers (such as travel agencies, airlines & hotels) and that these amounts and due dates will not necessarily coincide with UNF scholarship or financial aid disbursement timelines.
      5. I agree that there will be no deferment of study abroad program costs or extension of due dates for pending/undisbursed scholarships or financial aid.
      6. I understand that I may apply to a program after the payment deadlines, with acceptance contingent upon remaining spaces available. I also agree that if I am accepted to a program after a payment deadline, I am responsible to catch up on all payments to date within 2-5 business days after notification of my acceptance.
      7. I understand that late application to the program and/or late payments may result in study abroad costs being higher than those listed, and that I am responsible to pay those higher costs.
      8. I agree to contact my Faculty Leader and the UNF International Center in a timely manner if I have questions or concerns about my study abroad program costs.
      9. I agree to pay tuition, fees, study abroad program costs, and any other associated costs and fees according to the terms designated by UNF, the International Center, and/or the Faculty Leader. I understand that these costs and fees may be subject to increase as the result of:
        1. increases in study abroad related services, including but not limited to transportation, food, lodging, and planned excursions, and
        2. weakening of the U.S. dollar against the currency of the host country.

      10. I agree that program funds are not transferable to any other person or program.

    2. Cancellation, Withdrawal and Refunds
      1. I agree to the cancellation and refund policies as follows and accept the financial liabilities they specify.
      2. I agree that if no additional cancellation or refund policies are imposed by the College with which the program is associated, then once the first program charge has been placed on my account, the deadline to cancel my participation in the activity without financial penalty is 11:59pm on the due date of my first program charge.
      3. I agree that additional cancellation or refund policies may be imposed by the College with which the program is associated, and that those may supersede ii. above.
      4. I agree that in order to cancel my participation in the program, I must inform both the Faculty Leader and the UNF International Center in writing via email.
      5. I agree that non-payment of a study abroad charge by the due date is not written confirmation of intent to cancel my participation in the program.
      6. I agree that if I do not pay all appropriate program costs and fees by the required due date(s), the International Center and/or Faculty Leader reserve the right to cancel my participation in the study abroad program.
      7. In the event that my participation in the program is canceled by me, the Faculty Leader, or the UNF International Center for any reason: tuition refunds will be made per UNF tuition refund policies;
        1. funds already spent or encumbered for study abroad services (airfare, food, lodging, excursions, etc.) are subject to the refund policy of the company providing the service;
        2. payments I have made that have already been spent or otherwise encumbered either for me individually or for the group as a whole (which may be most or all of my total payments) may not be refundable;
        3. if I have overdue program charges on my account at the time of my cancellation, I may remain financially liable for part or the entirety of those charges, even after my participation in the activity has been canceled; and
        4. if I have been awarded any scholarships or financial aid, disbursement of which is conditioned on my participation in the program, such award(s) may be rescinded and, as a result, I may be liable for additional costs.

      8. I agree that UNF has the right to cancel the program by reason of actual, threatened, or impending: acts of God (such as tornado, flood, hurricane, fire, volcanic eruption, and the like) casualties; strikes, lockouts or other labor disturbances; terrorism, riots, insurrections, or civil commotions; embargos; governmental travel bans or warnings; orders or judgments of governmental authorities; or any or other act, event or condition that, in the reasonable determination of the Faculty Leader or UNF presents an unreasonable risk to the health, safety or welfare of participants or completion of the program. In the event that the program is canceled:
        1. payments I have made that have already been spent or otherwise encumbered, either for me individually or for the group as a whole (which may be most or all of my total payments) may not be refundable; and
        2. funds already spent or encumbered for study abroad services (airfare, lodging, excursions, etc.) are subject to the refund policy of the company providing the service.
  • Emergency Reserve Fund

    The University of North Florida has established an Emergency Reserve Fund (ERF) supported by a portion of the program costs that are charged to each student participating in a UNF Faculty-Led activity abroad. This portion of the program costs is non-refundable.

    While the ERF is primarily meant to cover those overseas travel situations in which unforeseen costs affecting the group are incurred due to weather, natural disasters or political situations, the ERF may also help individual students who need to cancel their participation in a study abroad program (either while abroad on the activity, or prior to departure from the U.S.), in the event of any of the following:

    1. Student's involuntary call to active military duty;
    2. Sudden incapacitating illness/injury (other than those attributable to known pre-existing conditions, such as those disclosed by the student in the Faculty-Led Study Abroad Application) of such severity that international travel during the activity dates is impossible;
    3. Death of the student or a member of the student's immediate family (parent, spouse, child, sibling, grandparents);
    4. Other documented exceptional circumstances beyond the control of the student. (Exceptional circumstances are defined as unforeseen, serious in nature, and precluding the student from international travel during the UNF activity dates, other than those arising in connection with UNF Code of Conduct violations by the student.

    For more information, or to submit a claim, please contact the UNF International Center.

  • Reasonable Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

    If you have a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and may require an accommodation or auxiliary aid(s) for the study abroad experience, please contact and register with the UNF Student Accessibility Services office (located in COEHS, Building 57/1500; phone (904) 620-2769; email drc@unf.edu).

    Military and veteran students who may need physical and/or academic accommodations should contact the Director for Military and Veterans Resource Center (located in COEHS, Building 57/2700) by emailing mvrc@unf.edu; calling (904) 620-5131 or visiting the MVRC website.

    Please note that foreign countries do not have to comply with the public access requirements of the ADA and there may be physical or other barriers that impair equal access to medical care, lodgings, restaurants, businesses and other buildings, services or facilities in foreign locales. Students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to research the access and service limitations of the locales to be visited. Further, prior to applying to the study abroad program, the student should meet with the Faculty Leader to ascertain whether the student will be able to participate in all activities of the study abroad program, or can participate in alternate activities to meet program objectives.

  • Student Conduct While Abroad
    1. Students approved for a study abroad program must be mature persons who want to participate because of a genuine interest in the educational and cultural values acquired by studying in a foreign setting.
    2. I understand that I have a personal responsibility for the success of the study abroad program and must exercise good judgment, respect the rights and feelings of others, and subscribe to the laws and customs of the host country as well as UNF regulations.
    3. Specifically, I understand that while a participant in the study abroad program, I am fully subject to UNF rules, regulations, and policies, including those contained within the UNF Student Handbook including but not limited to the Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy. I agree to adhere strictly to such rules, regulations, and policies during my participation in this study abroad program.
    4. Furthermore, I understand and accept that should the UNF International Center, in consultation with appropriate UNF campus officers, deem any of my behavior and/or activities dangerous or detrimental to any program goal(s) or participant(s), my parents or guardians may be informed and I consent to this disclosure.
    5. Finally, I understand that the University reserves the right to discontinue my participation in the Program and/or accommodations at any time in the event my actions or behavior, in the sole determination of the University or Faculty Leader, impede or obstruct the progress of the Program in any way or endanger myself, other participants, faculty or staff.
    6. In such event I agree: (i) I remain fully responsible for the entire cost and expenses related to the Program and I will not be entitled to any refund, and (ii) I will be responsible for my own conduct and the cost of my own conduct (including, but not limited to food, lodging, and transportation) at all times after my discontinuation.
  • Photography/Testimonial Release
    1. I hereby grant to the University of North Florida Board of Trustees, a public body corporate (UNF), and those acting pursuant to its authority the right and permission to:
    2. Record my participation and appearance on videotape, audiotape, film, photograph or any other medium.
    3. Use my name, likeness, voice and biographical material in connection with these recordings.
    4. Exhibit or distribute such recording in whole or in part without restrictions or limitation for any educational or promotional purpose which UNF, and those acting pursuant to its authority, deem appropriate.
    5. I further grant to UNF the right to copyright such recordings, photographs, and images in UNF's own name or to publish, to market and to assign without compensation or reporting to me.
    6. I hereby waive any rights or interests that I might have in such recordings, photographs, and images, including any rights to inspect and/or approve the finished photographs and images or the use of which they might be applied so long as their use shall be lawful.
    7. I, on behalf of myself, my family, heirs, and personal representatives, hereby release, discharge and agree to hold harmless The University of North Florida Board of Trustees, and the State of Florida, their officers, representatives, agents, employees and assigns from and against any and all claims, demands and causes of action which I might have arising from any actual or alleged violation or infringement of any trademark, trade name, contract, agreement, copyright (common law or statutory), patent, invasion of privacy, defamation, or any other cause of action arising out of the production, distribution and exhibition of the recordings, photographs and images. I agree that this my agreement to release, discharge and hold harmless will be construed pursuant to the laws of the State of Florida and venue for any legal proceeding shall be in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida.
  • Risks of Travel
    1. I am fully aware of the risks and hazards associated with foreign travel and residence, and I acknowledge that my participation in this study abroad program is a voluntary act that I have elected and is not required.
    2. I understand that I am solely responsible for obtaining and keeping safe my passport, money, bank/credit cards, tickets, jewelry and other personal property; and that I hereby waive any and all claims against UNF and its agents, officers, and employees for any expenses or losses due to my failure to obtain or properly safeguard these items or any other property of mine.
    3. I understand that individual trip cancellation/interruption insurance (including but not limited to flights, hotel reservations, train tickets, etc.) is not included in the emergency assistance and health insurance coverage or Emergency Reserve Fund provided by the International Center.
    4. If I desire to obtain additional trip cancellation/interruption insurance, it is my responsibility to obtain it. I understand that I may contact the UNF International Center for assistance, but the choice to obtain trip insurance is mine alone.

Health Information

  1. Preparing for a Healthy Experience Abroad
    1. General information on health and traveling abroad is available through:
      UNF Travel Clinic
      Student Health Services
      Building 39A / Room 2100
      (904) 620-2175

    2. I understand that a medical examination, though recommended, is not required by UNF for participation in a study abroad program.
    3. I further understand that UNF does not discriminate against individuals who have physical disabilities or have had physical, medical, emotional, or mental disorders.
    4. I understand, however, that if I have a history of any medical, psychiatric or psychological issues or concerns during the past two (2) years, I am strongly encouraged to consult with a medical professional, psychologist or counselor prior to departure to discuss the potential impacts of international travel in general, as well as to the specific program location, the program's specific activities, and to obtain recommendations for any treatments, diets, or prescriptions while abroad.
    5. I understand that I am encouraged to discuss any medical concerns in a timely manner, and prior to committing to the program, with the appropriate UNF representative so that proper, professional and adequate advice, assistance and/or accommodations as available may be arranged.
    6. I agree to obtain any/all immunizations and to observe other health precautions as recommended by my personal physician or the UNF Travel Clinic, and/or as required for travel to the country(ies) associated with my study abroad program, and I understand that immunizations may need to be completed weeks before my planned departure date.
    7. I understand that there may be added costs associated with seeking professional advice and/or treatment and that I bear the full responsibility for those costs.

  2. Health Care While Abroad
    1. I understand that UNF does not employ health care professionals overseas and cannot guarantee my access to medical services and facilities abroad.
    2. I understand that appropriate treatments - either physical or psychological - may not be as readily available abroad as in the United States.

  3. International Health Insurance

    Insurance for faculty-led study abroad programs will be arranged through the UNF International Center.

    1. I understand that UNF policy requires all study abroad students to have accident/health insurance and emergency medical assistance (including medical evacuation and repatriation of remains) applicable abroad for the UNF program dates and directly related travel time.
    2. I understand that the UNF International Center strongly recommends that I maintain emergency assistance and accident/health insurance for any personal travel abroad either before or after the UNF program dates, and that it is my responsibility to obtain coverage if desired for that personal travel time.
    3. I understand that, though covered by an appropriate international insurance policy, I may be required to pay for overseas medical services in advance of any needed treatment, and that the UNF International Center can assist with filing a claim for reimbursement from the insurance company upon my return.
    4. I understand that insurance coverage exceeding the University's arrangements may be obtained individually.
    5. I understand that the UNF International Center strongly discourages students from operating motor vehicles (cars, scooters, boats, etc.) while abroad and urges them to refrain from participating in certain activities identified by insurance companies as hazardous or life-threatening, including but not limited to professional sports, scuba diving, hang gliding, parachuting, or bungee jumping. Such activities often invalidate any existing life, medical or liability insurance normally carried by students, parents, or institutions.
