Study Abroad Scholarships

Financial Aid Information

Students who are eligible for State and/or Federal Title IV Financial Aid may be able to use their funding for studying abroad. Students must also be degree-seeking, meet minimum enrollment requirements, and have their study abroad coursework preapproved by their academic advisor prior to departure.

Study Abroad Scholarship Resources

Some UNF colleges and departments offer scholarships that can be used for study abroad.

SAILS (Student Affairs International Learning Scholarship)

The funds for this competitive UNF scholarship are available for study abroad trips and other international activities. Applicants must be current UNF students in good standing

$1,500 for short-term programs

$2,500 for long-term programs

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

This national scholarship program offers a competition for awards for study abroad for US citizens who are receiving federal Pell Grants.

Up to $5,000

David L. Boren Scholarship

The National Security Education Program (NSEP)

Boren scholarships can be applied to study abroad in all countries, except Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Preference will be given to applications for study in areas deemed critical to national security (more information on NSEP website). Applicants must be U.S. citizens who can meet a 1 year national service requirement after graduation.

Maximum scholarship awards are:

$8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only)

$10,000 for a semester

$20,000 for a full academic year

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

For graduating seniors who want to spend a year of study in another country before beginning their graduate career, as well as for graduate student MA or Ph.D. research. Students must be U.S. citizens who are in good health, have conferred a bachelor's degree before the start of the grant and have sufficient proficiency in the language of the country to carry out the proposed study/research.

Pays travel, tuition and a monthly stipend. Scholarship Diversity Abroad, in cooperation with AIFS Foundation offers this scholarship. Economically disadvantaged students, first-generation, students with disabilities and ethnic and racial diverse students are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, have been accepted into a study abroad program offered through a Partner Organization and have minimum 2.75 GPA. $500
Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship Corporation

This non-profit corporation in Minnesota will support a period of study in Denmark for a minimum of 1 semester (fall/spring) by a young person of Danish background and extraction and/or an individual who has demonstrated a strong interest and commitment to Denmark and "matters Danish".


Consider this scholarship if you are interested in our UNF exchange program at the University of Southern Denmark, or a third party program in Denmark.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers Undergraduate Awards to undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. Varies
Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite.
