Our Rivers, Coasts and Springs projects allow students to explore Jacksonville's natural habitat. The St. Johns River is Florida's longest river, measuring 310 miles. It's upper basin begins at the headwaters in Indian River County and flows north to the mouth of Mayport Village into the Atlantic Ocean. The river and its many tributaries meander throughout Jacksonville creating access in the country's largest per square mile city to be via bridges or boats. The beach communities to the east of Jacksonville are barrier islands as a result of the Intracoastal Waterway creating the western border and the Atlantic Ocean creating the eastern border.
