Don't Mess the Nest Week of Welcome Event


Sponsor: UNF Environmental Center and UNF Rotaract Club

What better way to show your Osprey Spirit than helping keep our campus beautiful. Don't Mess the Nest is a fun and interactive workshop about campus recycling and the myths that surround it. We will also discuss other topics such as the Sawmill Slough Preserve, ways to save energy and water both on campus and at home and UNF's plan to become carbon neutral by the year 2050. Student who participate in the event will receive a free "Don't Mess the Nest" T-shirt and reusable water bottle. Pizza from Mellow Mushroom will also be provided.


2013 Jacksonville Environmental Symposium

Sponsor: City of Jacksonville Environmental Protection Board and the UNF Environmental Center
Date: Aug. 23, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The City of Jacksonville’s Environmental Protection Board is again partnering with the University of North Florida Environmental Center to present the seventh annual Environmental Symposium. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Innovation, Conservation and Sustainability".

Northeast Florida Green Chamber Monthly Luncheon

Date: Friday, Sept. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location:Adam W. Herbert University Center

The Northeast Florida Green Chamber facilitates the growth and promotion of sustainable businesses in Florida and the Southeast by providing opportunities for networking, education, business development and collaboration. This luncheon will feature Mr. Beau Baker of Holland & Knight.


Baker will share his experience helping private companies navigate the complex legal issues of expansion, transition and investment and talk about what it takes to expand your company. Baker will also discuss the qualifications it takes with an established business model to qualify for funding to become a premier part of his venture-capital group.


Green Chamber luncheons are a great way to share and network with like-minded business professionals.

Talbot Island Ranger Programs

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Talbot Islands State Parks invite visitors to explore the area's natural environment throughout the month of August. Visitors will have the chance to discover the importance of the wildlife and vegetation that is part of north Florida's barrier islands.

Volunteer Opportunities


The Timucuan Trail Parks Foundation 
Location: Ringhaver Park

Date: Friday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon

Volunteers are needed to help with trail maintenance at Ringhaver Park. For all projects, volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes, and it is highly recommended that you bring work gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, sunglasses and water (and loppers/clippers, if you have them). Volunteers must follow all park rules and policies as well as promote and exhibit safe behavior at all times. Children younger 16 must be supervised by their parent/guardian or scout leader during the project. Anyone younger 18 years old must have signature of parent/guardian on liability waiver prior to starting work. 


St. Johns River Alliance

Location: Jacksonville Fishing Rodeo at Metropolitan Park Marina

It's time to get ready for the Jax Fishing Rodeo from Aug. 15-18 (rescheduled from early June due to Tropical Storm Andrea). The St. Johns River Alliance is the designated beneficiary for the net proceeds from beer sales. Please help the St. Johns River Alliance gain visibility and earn some money at this wonderful community event. 


Volunteers are needed for the following shifts:

Thursday, Aug. 15  --  noon to 4 p.m., 2-7 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 16 -- noon to 4 p.m. and 3-7 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 17 --  noon to 4 p.m. and 3-7 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 18, -- 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 2-6:30 p.m.
