2020-2021 Distinguished Professor Award

Lynne Arriale, Professor of Jazz Studies and Director of Small Ensembles

It is an honor to be considered for the Distinguished Professor Award, which recognizes a faculty member's "balanced record of distinction at UNF in all three areas of teaching, scholarship, and service." It is a privilege to have had the opportunity to share knowledge and insights with students and contribute to the University and the community.

Scholarship summary

• Performances: 464 (209 international), of these, 258 (126 international) since I began at UNF
• Extensive concert, festival and club performances throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, the UK, Japan and Australia, including five Kennedy Center performances
• Performances/recordings with top jazz performers: Five-time Grammy Award- winning artist Randy Brecker, Benny Golson, Larry Coryell, Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Monty Alexander, etc.
• 23 CDs recorded, of these, 15 as a leader, including 7 since I came to UNF
• Published/recorded musical compositions: 57; of these, 27 since I began at UNF
• Awards and recognition: 55; including 8 Jazzweek Radio Chart rankings, of these, 25 since I began at UNF, including 5 Jazzweek Radio Chart rankings. Albums have received "best of" honors or 4-star reviews in JAZZIZ, Downbeat and JazzTimes, the most important and influential jazz magazines.
• 20 Performances/interviews/live broadcasts and/or television, radio, and internet: two NPR Jazz Piano Christmas at the Kennedy Center concerts, NPR Weekend Edition and Public Radio International
• Media recognition: TV, radio and internet live broadcasts, 37; of these, 21 since I began at UNF
• Print and Internet Media Previews, Reviews and Promotions: 410, of them 266 since I began at UNF

Teaching summary

• During summer 2020, I gave my students weekly virtual lessons, gratis.
• 285 class sections taught since 2006, across 15 courses, ranging from 1000-6000 level
• Students have attended and graduated from prestigious graduate programs
• Students are working jazz musicians and have toured with many notable groups and performers
• Student competition winners: JAX Jazz Piano Competition, American Jazz Pianist Competition
• My groups performed four times at the Jazz Education Network Convention (2013- 2015)
• Combos typically perform two concerts per semester, live video, fall, 2020 on YouTube

2020-2021 Distinguished Professor Award

Mei Zhao

The Distinguished Professor Award is the most prestigious faculty award at UNF where winners are selected by a vote of the faculty. I am honored and humbled to be nominated for this award. Over the past 17 years, I have had the opportunity to work with a group of very talented and highly committed faculty and thousands of students at UNF. The following is a summary of my significant accomplishments.

Teaching summary

• Successfully established the Global Health Administration Certificate program and brought in 20 international students and almost $360,000 in external grants in 2017-2020.
• Successfully created the Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA) program and implemented it in 2019. The enrollment of this graduate program has doubled in only two years (18 students first year, 36 students second year).
• Oversaw the BHA program to be nationally ranked as the Top 25 national best program for bachelor's degrees in healthcare administration since 2018. Led the MHA program to receive the only graduate National American College of Healthcare Executive Higher Education Award in 2020. Led the MHA program to be chosen for the prestigious Commission on Accreditation of Health Management Education (CAHME) Mentorship Circle and was nationally recognized as a top performance program in 2020 to help other programs for their accreditation.
• Received 6 TLO grants and 3 travel grants (totaled $108,000) to develop and lead 6 groups of students to Asia and Europe to learn different health systems to improve the US health system.
• Wrote and coordinated successful self-study documents for the Accreditation and Certification of both MHA and BHA programs. The MHA program received the maximum 7-year reaccreditation from CAHME and the BHA program received a maximum of 6 years of recertification from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).
• Winner of the UNF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for 2010-2011.
• Winner of the UNF Outstanding International Leadership Award for 2008-2009.
• Jacksonville Outstanding Leadership Education Award. Women of Color Culture Foundation, 2012.

Scholarship Summary

• Twenty four (24) internal and external grants funded total: $536,295
• Forty (40) peer-reviewed articles, thirty-six (36) peer-reviewed professional presentations, and 20 invited presentations
• Publication "The Impact of Hospitalists…" received the National Recommended Reading Recognition by the 2020 Edgar C. Hayhow Award committee
• Publication "Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Performance…" received the 2019 National Edgar C. Hayhow Article of the Year Award, American College of Healthcare Executives
• Publication "Health Information Technology…"received the 2019 Best paper Award at the 32nd Annual International Conference of the Business and Health Administration Association (BHAA) Conference

Selected Service Activities

• Selected as UNF Osprey Heroes in April 2020 for my leadership in organizing more than $78,000 worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) donation to Baptist Health, Jacksonville in 2020
• Winner of City of Jacksonville Mayor's Asian American Association Board (MAAAB) Outstanding Community Service Award, 2015
• Chair of Healthcare Executive Bootcamp (UNF, Mayo Clinic, and Ascension Health): 2019- present
• Member of Global Leadership Committee, American University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA): 7/1/2018--present
• Member of Board of Directors North Florida ACHE: 2018-present
• Established the department Founding Member Foundation in 2018 and raised $125,000 in 2 years.
• Reviewer for 22 professional journals
