College of Education & Human Services (Undergraduate) - (Foundations & Secondary Education):

Programs of Study Changes (3 packages)

10/04/18: Passed

10/12/18: Approved

Log Number: 201801-39

Foundations & Secondary Education-Undergraduate

Change a degree-major of an existing program

Bachelor of Arts in Education - Science Education Major

Concentration: Biology (6 - 12)

Summary of changes:

Summary and Rationale: This APC change brings UNF into compliance with BOG regulation 8.014. The 6-12 Biology Education Program of study has been modified to be 120 credit hours. In 2012, UNF discovered that its request, along with several other SUS institutional requests, to exceed 120 semester hours was never formally approved because the number of hours requested was inconsistent throughout the SUS.

Lower Division Changes

Acceptable substitutes for pre-requisite courses were updated to match the Florida SUS list of Common Pre-requisites for 6-12 Biology Education programs. Additionally, EDF 2085, Introduction to Diversity for Educators (3 credits), EME 2040, Introduction to Technology for Educators (3 credits), and PHY 2053/2053L, Algebra-Based Physics and Algebra-Based Physics Lab I (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), were removed from the required pre-requisites, as they are not on the Florida SUS list of Common Pre-requisites for 6-12 Biology Education programs. Language has been added to strongly encourage students to take these courses, as they will better prepare 6-12 Biology Education students for the teaching field. PHY 2053/2053L, Algebra-Based Physics and Algebra-Based Physics Lab I (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), was not added to the Upper Division required program of study, as it is not a pre-requisite for upper division courses in the program of study. Also, the material assessed in the Florida 6-12 Biology Education Content Exam is covered in other courses within the program of study.

Upper Division Changes

To keep the Upper-Division course of study at 60 credits (to make a total of 120 credits for the program of study), the upper-division science elective was eliminated and CHM 2210L was eliminated. The material assessed in the Florida 6-12 Biology Education Content Exam is addressed in other courses within the program of study.

The Biology Department has agreed to waive the CHM 2210L, Organic Chemistry Lab I (1 credit), requirement for PCB 3023C, Molecular and Cell Biology (4 credits) for 6-12 Biology Education majors.

No additional resources are required.

Change a degree-major of an existing program

Bachelor of Arts in Education - Science Education Major

Concentration: Physics (6 - 12)

Summary of changes:

Summary and Rationale: The proposed changes to the 6-12 Physics Education program of study bring the total credit hours to 120.In 2012, UNF discovered that its request, along with several other SUS institutional requests, to exceed 120 semester hours was never formally approved because the number of hours requested was inconsistent throughout the SUS. This APC change brings UNF into compliance with BOG regulation 8.014.

Lower Division Changes

Per the Florida SUS list of Common Pre-requisites for 6-12 Physics Education programs, courses and acceptable substitutes were updated to match these state requirements and to accurately match the UNF catalog course listings. Additionally, EDF 2085, Introduction to Diversity for Educators (3 credits), and EME 2040, Introduction to Technology for Educators (3 credits) were removed from the required pre-requisites, as they are not on the Florida SUS list of Common Pre-requisites for 6-12 Physics Education programs. Language has been added to strongly encourage students to take these courses as they will better prepare 6-12 Physics Education students for the teaching field.

Upper Division Changes

To keep the Upper Division course of study at 60 credits (to make a total of 120 credits for the program of study), PHY 3220, Classical Mechanics (4 credits), and PHY 4320, Electricity and Magnetism (4 credits), will not be specifically required. These courses would require an addition of MAP 2302, Ordinary Differential Equations (3 credits), and PHZ 3113, Mathematical Physics (4 credits) to the program of study (thus adding a total seven credits of pre-requisite courses that would need to be taken). To address this programmatic change students will be required to take seven credits from the list of the following courses: AST 3217, Astrophysics I (4 credits), PHY 3722C, Electronics for Scientists (4 credits), PHY 4802L, Advanced Physics Laboratory (2 credits), and PHZ 4404, Solid State Physics (3 credits).

Change a degree-major of an existing program

Bachelor of Arts in Education - Science Education Major

Summary of changes:

Summary and Rationale: Proposed modifications to the 6-12 Chemistry Education program of study bring the total credits to 120. In 2012, UNF discovered that its request, along with several other SUS institutional requests, to exceed 120 semester hours was never formally approved because the number of hours requested was inconsistent throughout the SUS. Lower Division Changes

Per the Florida SUS list of Common Pre-requisites for 6-12 Chemistry Education programs, courses and acceptable substitutes were updated to match these state requirements. PHY 2053/2053L Algebra-Based Physics and Algebra-Based Physics Lab I (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), and PHY 2054/2054L, Algebra-Based Physics and Algebra-Based Physics Lab II (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), were added as required pre-requisites. Additionally, EDF 2085, Introduction to Diversity for Educators (3 credits), EME 2040, Introduction to Technology for Educators (3 credits), BSC 1010C (General Biology I) and PHY 2048/PHY 2048L, Calculus-Based Physics I and Calculus-Based Physics lab (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), were removed from the required pre-requisites, as they are not on the Florida SUS list of Common Pre-requisites for 6-12 Chemistry Education programs. Language has been added to strongly encourage students to take these courses as they will better prepare 6-12 Chemistry Education students for the teaching field. BSC 1010C, General Biology I (4 credits), was not added to the Upper Division required program of study, as it is not a pre-requisite for upper divisions courses in the program of study nor the material covered in this course part of the Florida 6-12 Chemistry Education Content Exam. PHY 2048/PHY 2048L, Calculus-Based Physics I and Calculus-Based Physics lab (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively) was not kept as a program requirement as PHY 2053/2053L Algebra-Based Physics and Algebra-Based Physics Lab I (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), and PHY 2054/2054L, Algebra-Based Physics and Algebra-Based Physics Lab II (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), address the pre-requisites for the 6-12 Chemistry Education program of study.

Upper Division Changes

To keep the Upper Division course of study at 60 credits (to make a total of 120 credits for the program of study) and to address pre-requisites for program of study courses, MAC 2312, Calculus II (4 credits) has been added to meet a pre-requisite requirement of CHM 4410/CHM4410L, Physical Chemistry I and Physical Chemistry Lab (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively). Adding this requirement necessitated cutting other Chemistry courses at the Upper Division. To meet the 60 credit limit for the Upper Division, CHM 3610L, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory (1 credit), and the selection of two chemistry electives (from the list of CHM 4130/CHM 4130L, Mod Analytical Chemistry and Mod Analytical Chemistry Lab (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), BCH 4033/BCH 4033L, Biochemistry and Biochemistry Lab) (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), and CHS 4615/CHS 4615L, Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry Lab (3 credits and 1 credit, respectively), were eliminated. The material covered in these courses is either addressed in other courses or not needed as part of preparation for the Florida 6-12 Chemistry Education Content Exam. Courses were also updated for accuracy to match listings in the UNF course catalog.
