School of Music - Undergraduate
Change a
degree-major of an existing program
Bachelor of
Music Education - Music Education Major
Summary of the changes:
The
total credits for the Bachelor of Music Education degree will be reduced from
131 to 126 credits. To achieve this, we will remove one semester of applied
music which includes:
Applied
lessons (2 credits);
Large
ensembles (1 credit);
Concert
attendance (0 credits); and
Performance
lab (0 credits).
In
addition, the number of professional electives will be reduced from 8 to 7, and
MUE 3693 - Technology in Music Education will be reduced from 3 credits to 2
credits.
These
changes make our music education degree more similar to the music education
degree programs at other state universities.
Three
course titles are being changed to more accurately reflect course content:
MUE 4311
Elementary Music - Teaching and Assessment is being changed to MUE 4311 Teaching
Elementary Music;
MUE 4331
Secondary Choral Music- Teaching and Assessment is being changed to MUE 4331
Teaching Secondary Choral Music; and
MUE 4332
Secondary Instrumental Music- Teaching and Assessment is being changed to MUE
4332 Teaching Secondary Instrumental Music.
Three
major electives are being removed from the list of options as they are not
strongly related to the curriculum:
MUM1611
Concert Recording;
MUM1622
Introduction to Sound Reinforcement; and
MUT4650
Composition and Improvisation).
One
course option is being added: MUE 4xxx - Musical Theater Techniques).
Three
4000-level courses can be substituted with equivalent 5000-level graduate
courses to facilitate students wanting to take advantage of a 5-year BME + MME
program:
MUE 4331
Teaching Secondary Choral Music can be substituted with MUE 5336 Teaching
Secondary Choral Music Programs;
MUE 4332
Teaching Secondary Instrumental Music can be substituted with MUE 5338 Teaching
Secondary Instrumental Music Programs; and
MUE 4311
Teaching Elementary Music can be substituted with MUE 5316 Teaching Elementary
