Change an existing course

Genetics

PCB

Junior (3xxx)

063 C

This request is to separate PCB3063C (4 credits) into a 3-credit lecture course (PCB3063) and a 1 credit lab course (PCB3XXXL). We are requesting this change to address scheduling issues that should improve time to graduation. The in-person lab will be a standalone 1 credit co-requisite to the course. The lab fee associated with the original C course will be transferred to PCB3XXXL.

New Course Description:

Prereqs: BCS2012C, CHM2210/L. Principles of classical and molecular genetics will be discussed via studies of nuclear inheritance, extra-nuclear inheritance, and gene regulation.

Add a new course

Genetics Lab (1c)

PCB

Junior (3xxx)

Pre-requisite:

None

Co-requisite:

"PCB3063C: Genetics"

Course Description:
Co-req: PCB3063 Genetics. In Genetics lab, students will conduct experiments that demonstrate the application of classical and molecular genetics techniques.

Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program

Bachelor of Science - Biology Major

Concentration: Coastal Environmental

Summary of the changes:

We are requesting the following changes to the Program of study: 1) The splitting of the major requirement PCB3063C Genetics (4 credit) into separate lecture (3 credit) and lab (1 credit) courses (Package number 201901-34). This should allow for faster time to degree. 2) Updating the title of BSC3842 from Sophomore Seminar to Writing and Analytical Skills in Biology (1 credit) (package 201808-51), 3) adding three courses to the list of approved major electives. The courses to be added are: ZOO 4407 Biology of Sharks and Rays (3 credit), ZOO 4559L Shark Ecology (3 credit), and ZOO4551C Dolphin Behavioral Ecology (4 credit); and 4) minor changes to prerequisite courses, course titles, etc. to reflect changes that have been previously approved by the APC system. The total credit hours for this Program of study remains 120 hours.

Concentration: Ecology and Evolution Biology

Summary of the changes:

We are requesting the following changes to the Program of study:

  1. The splitting of the major requirement PCB3063C Genetics (4 credits) into separate lecture (3 credits) and lab (1 credit) courses (Package number 201901-34). This should allow for faster time to degree.
  2. Updating the title of BSC3842 Sophomore Seminar to Writing and Analytical Skills in Biology (1 credit) (package 201808-51),

Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program

Bachelor of Science - Biology Major

Concentration: Biomedical Sciences

Summary of the changes:

We are requesting the following changes to the Program of study:

  1. The splitting of the major requirement PCB3063C Genetics (4 credits) into separate lecture (3 credits) and lab (1 credit) courses (Package number 201901-34). This should allow for faster time to degree.
  2. Updating the title of BSC3842 Sophomore Seminar to Writing and Analytical Skills in Biology (1 credit) (package 201808-51),
  3. Changing the major requirements from 18 to 21 credits by removing PCB3043C Principles of Ecology (4 credits) and replacing it with both MCB3020C Microbial Biology (4 credits) and BCH4024 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3 credits). These changes better reflect the requirements for graduate study in Biomedical fields (MD, DDS, Ph.D etc.) and will better prepare our students for jobs and advanced training in the field.
  4. Modify the Major electives to require either PCB3043C Ecology (4 credits) or PCB4674 Evolution (3 creditss) as one elective and adding PCB4067 Molecular Basis of Inheritance (3 credits) and PCB4540 Genomics (3 credits) as Major electives.
  5. Because the major requirments have increased, the number of free electives drops to 9 credits. The total credit hours for this degree remains 120 credit hours.

School of Music – Undergraduate

Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program

Bachelor of Music - Music Performance Major

Concentration: Music-Classical Voice

Summary of the changes:

We wish to update the ensemble requirement in the Classical Voice concentration of the BM–Performance degree.

Currently, each semester of the first two years has "MUN2310 UNF Chorale (Lower) (0-1 credits)" listed for the ensemble requirement, and each semester of the last two years has "MUN3313 UNF Chorale (Upper) (0-1 credits)" listed for the ensemble requirement.

For each semester of the first two years, we would like the POS to say "Choose one MUN 2000- or 3000-level choral ensemble (1 credit)" and for each semester of the last two years we would like it to say "Choose one MUN 3000-level choral ensemble (1 credit)." Furthermore, we would like to add text at the beginning of the program of study that says the following: "Each semester, Classical Voice students are assigned to a choral ensemble by the School of Music faculty. Enrollment in that ensemble fulfills the choral ensemble requirement for that semester. If additional ensembles are taken in any given semester, the 0 credit option should be used, or students must use the additional ensemble to fulfill elective credits. These additional ensembles will not count toward the semesterly choral ensemble requirement."

The reasons for these changes are as follows:

  1. Not all Classical Voice students take MUN2310 or MUN3313 to meet the ensemble requirement each semester. Other courses that can be used to meet this requirement include MUN3323 Osprey Treble Chorus, MUN3333 UNF Men's Chorale, or MUN3343 Chamber Singers. By changing the POS as described above, students in their first two years will be able to take MUN2310 or one of these other courses, and students in their last two years will be able to take MUN3313 or one of these other courses.
  2. Whichever course is taken to meet the ensemble requirement each semester, it should be taken for credit. The "0-1 credits" that appears in the current POS is a mistake.
  3. The text we are adding at the beginning of the POS is to ensure that Classical Voice students take at least one ensemble per semester (rather than taking multiple ensembles in some semesters and no ensembles in other semesters). Continuous enrollment in ensembles throughout a student's music studies (like continuous enrollment in applied lessons) is a cornerstone of a music performance degree. The music faculty believe it is imperative that students participate in ensembles at every stage of their musical development while at UNF.
