Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program
Bachelor of Music - Music Performance Major
Concentration: Music-Classical Voice
Summary of the changes:
We wish to update the ensemble
requirement in the Classical Voice concentration of the BM–Performance degree.
Currently, each semester of the
first two years has "MUN2310 UNF Chorale (Lower) (0-1 credits)"
listed for the ensemble requirement, and each semester of the last two years
has "MUN3313 UNF Chorale (Upper) (0-1 credits)" listed for the
For each semester of the first two
years, we would like the POS to say "Choose one MUN 2000- or 3000-level
choral ensemble (1 credit)" and for each semester of the last two years we
would like it to say "Choose one MUN 3000-level choral ensemble (1
credit)." Furthermore, we would like to add text at the beginning of the
program of study that says the following: "Each semester, Classical Voice
students are assigned to a choral ensemble by the School of Music faculty.
Enrollment in that ensemble fulfills the choral ensemble requirement for that
semester. If additional ensembles are taken in any given semester, the 0 credit
option should be used, or students must use the additional ensemble to fulfill
elective credits. These additional ensembles will not count toward the
semesterly choral ensemble requirement."
The reasons for these changes are
- Not all Classical Voice students
take MUN2310 or MUN3313 to meet the ensemble requirement each semester. Other
courses that can be used to meet this requirement include MUN3323 Osprey Treble
Chorus, MUN3333 UNF Men's Chorale, or MUN3343 Chamber Singers. By changing the
POS as described above, students in their first two years will be able to take
MUN2310 or one of these other courses, and students in their last two years
will be able to take MUN3313 or one of these other courses.
- Whichever course is taken to
meet the ensemble requirement each semester, it should be taken for credit. The
"0-1 credits" that appears in the current POS is a mistake.
- The text we are adding at the
beginning of the POS is to ensure that Classical Voice students take at least
one ensemble per semester (rather than taking multiple ensembles in some
semesters and no ensembles in other semesters). Continuous enrollment in
ensembles throughout a student's music studies (like continuous enrollment in
applied lessons) is a cornerstone of a music performance degree. The music
faculty believe it is imperative that students participate in ensembles at
every stage of their musical development while at UNF.
