Certified Public Accountants

The Coggin College provides continuing education classes for Certified Public Accounts (CPA) as a partial requirement for maintaining their professional license. Classes are provided during two sessions. The first being the Fall academic term and the second during the Summer term. Courses are taught by Coggin faculty who are full time faculty and professional accountants.

May 15, 2020 GASB & Governmental Audit Update  2020
This course will cover the latest GASB Statements, proposed GASB pronouncements, issues surrounding the implementation of recent accountings standards, and recent GASB Proposals. Class topics include current GAO Yellow Book and auditing requirement, Title 2 Uniform Guidance for Federal Grants and recent SASs relating to governmental auditing.

May 29, 2020 Ethics: Florida Ethical Issues – 2020  8:15 - Noon or 12:30 - 4:15
The course will meet the Florida Board of Accountancy ethics requirement and review Florida statutes 455, 473 and selected administrative rulings (61-H1). The course will consider various ethical topics affecting the accounting profession and will include case studies and class participation regarding the application of ethical standards. There will also be a discussion of the accountant’s code of conduct and application of ethical standards.

May 29, 2020 Taxation of S Corporations – 2020 12:30 - 4:15
S Corporations continue to grow in popularity and now outnumber the number of both C Corporations and Partnerships. This CPE Session will review the basic tax provisions associated with S Corporations as well as the impact of recent legislation and court cases. Tax planning opportunities related to S Corporations will also be discussed.

June 5, 2020 Governmental and Not-for Profit Reporting Models – 2020
This course will discuss the current reporting models for governmental and NFP entities and will include illustrations of current presentations and notes. Finally, the course will review the proposed updates, the reporting models, financial statement and federal audit.

June 12, 2020 FASB, Not-for-Profit Accounting, and Federal Auditing Update – 2020
This course covers the latest issues surrounding not-for-profit accounting, including issues related to the audits, GAO Yellow Book, the not-for-profit reporting model project, current regulatory issues and their impact upon not-for-profit accounting, and the most recent FASB and SAS pronouncements related to NFPs.

June 26, 2020 Accounting Update – What You Need to Know – 2020
New for 2020: An examination of new FASB pronouncements for credit losses, hedges, financial instruments, income taxes simplification, etc. We will also have a continued discussion of lease accounting, revenue recognition and other recently implemented guidance.

Mark Leininger, CPA

Course Instructors

John A. Adams, CPA was a tax partner with Adams and Harper, P.A. in Orange Park. Adams retired from the firm in 2016. Prior to working there, he was employed in various positions with the Internal Revenue Service. Adams has served as an adjunct instructor in taxation at the collegiate level and has taught continuing education classes throughout his career. He received his B.B.A. degree with honors from the University of Georgia and his M.B.A. degree from the University of North Florida.


John P. Duffy, MAcc, CPA is retired from the State of Florida, Office of the Auditor General. He was the audit supervisor for the Jacksonville office and currently is a financial analyst with local government. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Florida and Master of Accountancy from the University of North Florida. During 39 years as a state auditor, his work experience included audits of district school boards, local governmental units, state college and universities, the State of Florida Federal Single Audit and various state agencies.

Jeffrey S. Gottlieb, CPA is on the faculty at the University of North Florida. He received his Bachelor of Science in Economics from Cornell University, a Master of Science in Accounting from the State University of New York at Albany, and a Master of Science in Taxation from American University. Prior to joining the University of North Florida, Gottlieb spent 35 years in public accounting and industry. During this time, he served as a Director with Coopers and Lybrand and as the Chief Tax Officer for Security Capital Group, The St. Joe Company and Winn Dixie Stores. Currently, Gottlieb teaches undergraduate courses in Individual, Corporate and Partnership Taxation, and Tax Planning.

Mark A. Leininger, CPA is on the faculty at the University of North Florida. He received his M.B.A. degree from the University of North Florida and his B.S. from Carson-Newman College. Prior to joining the University of North Florida’s faculty, Mark served seven years as the Principal Accounting Officer, Vice President and Controller of Florida East Coast Industries, Inc. Additionally, Mark served four years with CSX Transportation, Inc. as an Assistant Controller and 12 years with the international accounting firm Ernst & Young. Mark, as a senior manager with Ernst & Young, served such notable clients as CSX, the PGA Tour and the ATP Tour.

We must receive you completed registration and payment to reserve your seat. If course enrollment is low, we may cancel, postpone or combine courses. If you are unable to attend, we will honor a written request to apply your registration fee toward a future program if it is received a minimum of three working days prior to the program for which you have registered. You may fax or email your written request. As a second option, you may send a substitute.
