Employers are asked to lead a conversation on a career related topic for 50-minutes. Top sessions are always interactive, informative and not a monologue speech.
Ideally the 50-minute session covers three main areas: career education topic, company information and full-time/intern position opportunities.
-
- Large group interactive discussions
- Employer panel Q&As with company professionals/young alumni/mixed company departments; usually with 2 to 5 company professionals
- Role play activities, especially when leading discussions on a career tool, such as interviewing.
- Two company representatives take turns facilitating/leading in order to break up the presentation and present different people/perspectives.
*If you are a large organization with multiple departments or units attending Coggin Career Week, consider having a panel with all units present so students can understand differences between functional areas, position availability and which recruiters they should speak with.
-
Select topics students find interesting; don't just talk about your company. These sessions are not designed to be strictly a company information session. It is an informative space created to have mutually beneficial, meaningful and educational with networking development components.
Topics students generally find interesting and want to listen to, including but not limited to:
-
Profession Exploration: "A Day in the Life of Profession X", "career paths for profession Y" and "mobility opportunities as a young professional".
-
Industry Insights: What is it like to work in finance? Explain any differences in sectors. Is it difficult to transition to other areas in this industry or company? How does pharmaceutical sales differ from other sales?
-
Career Tools: Improving first or second round interviews, best résumé tips, LinkedIn, networking and backpack-to-briefcase transition tips for soon to be college graduates.
-
Company and Recruiter: Diversity in the workforce, women in the boardroom, understanding company culture, tips to find a job or internship or how to fund success on any internship.
-
Internships and/or Jobs: Are you advertising positions today? If using a PowerPoint, make sure to have at least one slide with opportunities and available descriptions.
-
Timelines: What is the expected timeline for interviews and decisions? When and where are you posting positions?
Recruiter Availability and Follow Up: Are you attending Career Showcase? Speaking at an upcoming student organization meeting? Attending the Coggin Career Week Student-Employer Mixer? Hosting a Coggin Career Week sponsored lunch? Hosting a company mixer at a local restaurant? Hosting a company information session through Coggin Career Week? If so, tell students when, where and how they should connect with your company.
*Students love "free" anything. Bringing company branded items are sure to be a hit during your session, even if you can only distribute a few fun promotional items.
-
After identifying your session topic(s), it's time to write your description. This description is what students will read to determine if your session is of value to them - similar to when a professional attends a conference and selects which breakout session to attend.
-
Employers who are frequent attendees to Coggin Career Week face this dilemma: If this is your session(s), you can do as you wish.
Generally speaking, repeating a session is okay, but consider it may not attract new students to your sessions. Would you want to listen to the same work presentation again? A best practice is to change session content or add a new spin on things from the following year.
-
Yes. Please let a Coggin Career Week staff member know you would like to have food and/or food for students during your session and we will arrange a food table for setup.
