Research Opportunities

FEHI

At UNF, we not only provide students with teaching opportunities, but also opportunities to engage in research and service. UNF undergraduate and graduate students, in collaboration with UNF Deaf Ed. faculty, have participated in a variety of research projects involving student who are deaf/Deaf or hard of hearing (d/DHH) as well as children with other special needs. These project include:

  • Using visual phonics and Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lesson curriculum to teach reading to struggling d/DHH readers

  • Motivating student who are d/DHH to want to read through the use of graphic novels.

  • Teaching reading strategies to students who are d/DHH multilingual learners (DMLs). Students who are DMLs come from homes where their families speak a language other than English.

  • Creating an outdoor classroom to determine the effect on learning and behaviors.

These research projects have resulted in University, State, and National presentations with the students presenting along with the lead faculty member. Students are able to apply for COEHS scholarships to help pay for their travel to conferences. In addition, students have been able to write and publish this research with their professors in leading journals such as The American Annals of the Deaf and Communications Disorder Quarterly.
