Graduate Program Information

The College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) at the University of North Florida offers a number of graduate degree programs. These include an array of master's degree programs and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Educational Leadership.

Doctoral Program

Advanced graduate studies support the development of educational leaders with knowledge, vision, and commitment to work for the improvement of education through a variety of leadership roles. The interdisciplinary Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (Ed.D) program draws from a number of departments and other instructional resources of the university and incorporates advanced techniques in individual assessment.

Masters Programs

Program Description

The COEHS offers master's degree programs (a) for students who have completed undergraduate programs in non-education disciplines and are interested in becoming certified to teach; (b) for students who are interested in becoming certified in educational leadership or school counseling, or licensed as mental health counselors [licensure/advanced-certification programs]; or (c) for students who are certified as teachers and wish to pursue advanced studies in education and/or additional teacher certifications [advanced study programs]. Program Length

Master's degree programs will vary in length depending on the student's undergraduate background and career interest. Graduate students who completed state-approved teacher certification programs at the undergraduate level and are seeking master's degrees in the same content area will complete 36 to 39 hours of graduate study in their master's programs. Graduate students who have no education background and are seeking initial teacher certification will have longer programs of study. The exact length will vary depending on the student's undergraduate course work and his or her intended area of certification.


It is expected that all master's degree programs will be completed within a five-year or shorter time period. The time a student spends completing a master's degree program will vary depending on the full-time or part-time status of the student and the length of the program. To help facilitate the speed of completion of our master's degree programs, the COEHS offers its graduate courses in the evenings and during weekends. In summer months we also offer some course work during the day.

Program Formats

To meet the various needs of the graduate students we serve, the COEHS offers its master's degree programs in two different formats: a cohort and a traditional format.

  • Cohort Format

    • The college designs cohort master's degree programs to meet the common needs of a specific group of graduate students. One cohort may be designed to help teachers from a set of urban elementary schools use their graduate study to focus on issues related to urban education. A second cohort may be designed for a group of teachers who wish to explore technology and its role in education today. A third cohort may be designed for a group of teachers who live or work in one area of the city and are seeking first-time certification in special education. In the cohort model students enter the program together and take all, or at least the majority, of their course work together. If appropriate, much of the course work may be completed at an off-campus site selected by the college and the cohort members.   • Traditional Format

    • In the traditional format a student applies for admission to graduate study in any of the three academic terms. At some point during the admission process students will meet with both a professional advisor and a faculty program sponsor to plan their individual programs of study. After the program of study is completed, the student assumes responsibility for following the program in a time frame that meets the student's needs yet honors the sequence of courses discussed with the program sponsor and all University related regulations.


Several colleges and universities offer master's degrees in the northeast Florida region. Selecting a progam at the most appropriate institution for your particular needs may require some study on your part.
