Biography

Professor Barr began her social work career working with clients who experienced domestic and sexual violence, including work in emergency housing environments, providing support during Sexual Assault Nurse Examinations and assisting with the legal injunction process at the Refuge House, Inc. in Tallahassee, Florida.

 

After receiving her MSW, Professor Barr gained a majority of her practice experience and received her LCSW working in the field of mental health and substance abuse, providing a wide range of clinical services to persons experiencing severe and persistent mental illness, in both inpatient and community-based settings at the Apalachee Center, Inc. in Tallahassee, Florida. Prior to joining the UNF faculty, Professor Barr worked in the field of higher education at Tallahassee Community College, overseeing a wide range of student support services, including Student Accessibility Services and the College's Counseling Center.

 

Professor Barr has also provided services to caregivers of wounded veterans through contracted work for the Operation Family Caregiver Program housed within the Florida State University College of Social Work. As a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor, she has facilitated (20) Adult Mental Health First Aid certification courses to a variety of audiences. In addition, Professor Barr serves as an auditor with expertise in mental health and evaluates the mental health practices in the Florida prison system with the Florida Correctional Medical Authority. She worked as an adjunct instructor at the Florida State University College of Social Work from 2011-2018.
