UNF hosted 2010 First Coast Meeting of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) on January 22, 2010. Presenters from around the state gave oral presentations in many areas of mathematics. Michael Reid from the Universtity of Centeral Florida presented, A Journey from Tiling and Combinatorics to Algebra, as the keynote speech. Abstract:
Tiling problems are among the oldest and most basic mathematics questions. We begin with a discussion of some discrete tiling problems (think of packing "Tetris" shapes), their history and motivation. We explore some of the techniques for analyzing these problems, which takes us on a journey into algebra.
