Foreign Language Study: General Guidance

As indicated in the official policy regarding the foreign language requirement for International Studies majors, students must complete coursework at or above the Intermediate II level in a language other than English (see category 1 on the policy) or demonstrate equivalent proficiency (see categories 2-5 on the policy).

Students who fall into category 1 (those planning on taking coursework in another language) can contact Dr. Greg Helmick, the chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures directly for assistance with course selection and placement.

All students who fall into categories 2-5 (in other words, those who are not completing coursework in another language through or above the intermediate level) should first contact Dr. Clayton McCarl, director of the International Studies Program, who will evaluate the student’s situation and then put them in contact with the chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures for further guidance.
