UNF Writes Program Assessment

The Department of English has established a program to respond to major problems with student writing and thus hope to achieve two fundamental aims:

  • Creating an awareness among our students that the UNF faculty members across all the disciplines and at all levels—lower-division, upper-division, and graduate—expect students to learn how to write well.
  • Getting students to realize that learning how to write well is not something they can do once and for all, but must continue to do throughout their college and graduate school careers, especially as they declare a major and must become familiar with the specialized writing requirements of a particular discipline.

UNF Writes is a sociological experiment. We hypothesize that, if sufficient numbers of UNF faculty will

  1. Identify the specific elements of successful writing in their disciplines and sub-disciplines and;

  2. Use a specific kind of “self-talk rubric” to evaluate student writing, students will more readily and successful internalize our expectation that they write well and become more cognizant of the fact that learning how to write expertly involves learning the specialized writing requirements of a particular discipline.
