Media Week 2018

The Department of Communication hosted Media Week Oct. 22 to Oct. 26to provide our undergraduate and graduate students with insights from professionals in advertising, public relations, journalism, and production. Media professionals visited communication classes, engaged students in specialized Q-and-A sessions, lunched with students, participated in a panel on global and domestic diversity issues at media companies, and participated in a panel on the state of social media. There were also departmental alumni events.

Monday, October 22

Premier of "Uncovering Jax"

7 - 9 p.m.

Student Union Auditorium, 2nd floor

Uncovering Jax is a series of short studentdocumentaries about the little-known stories of historic Jacksonville residents.This year's stories will include Jospeh E. Blodgett (Jacksonville's first black millionaire), Richard E. Norman (pioneer race film-maker during the era of silent film), Anna Kingsley (former slave turned landowner), A. Philip Randolph (civil rights activist), and the gentrification of the Old Brooklyn neighborhood in Jacksonville. There will be a panel following the screening.Frank Goodin will be the moderator. Tuesday, October 23

"Enemy of the People" Panel

11 a.m. - Noon

Bldg. 14D, Room 2001 [Note: This is a new location based on high student demand]

In recent years, journalists have been accused of being the "enemy of the people." Members of the media will serve as panelists and discuss the role of the press and how journalists can respond to these accusations and challenges.

Domestic and Global Diversity Panel

2 - 3 p.m.

Bldg. 14D, Room 2014

Professionals will discuss both domestic and global diversity issues as they relate to advertising, journalism, public relations and production, and the things students should know about global and domestic diversity issues that may help them when they enter their respective industry.

Communication Management 101

6 - 7 p.m.

Executives will discuss the top "do's and don'ts" of communication management. This will be of particular interest to students enrolled in UNF's Communication Management master's degree program, but it is open to undergraduates as well.

Advertising Breakout

Professionals will describe their positions and talk about what it takes to work in their fields, then take questions from students.
