Team Stupid Land Clowns -- 48-hour film festival

The BEA Student Media Clubs 48-hour film festival is a competition that required teams from schools all over the country to make their films in a pre-assigned genre (comedy or action). Teams were also assigned three “production constants” that had to appear in each film. The constants were a tennis racket, the name Abby Sutherland, and the required line: “I can’t believe this is happening again.” There was another catch… they were only allowed 48 hours to brainstorm, write, create, and submit an entry which required hours of teamwork, drive, and determination to get it done. The 2019 festival had 20 teams participate October 25-27 and November 1-3. UNF students had not competed in this specific festival before, and for the first time we had not one, but two teams participate. One of our teams took 1st place!

The team awarded first place was the Stupid Land Clowns for their film Blood Money. Rachel Tucker was the director, Carly Kramer was the director of photography, and Jesse Scales, Judd Barczack, Ethan Hray, Kathryn Sands, Antonio Richa, Tirik Peterson, and Sunni Linville assisted in writing, editing, and performing the scripts. The team received 3 complimentary BEA2020 registrations, certificates and will have their film screened during the annual BEA Conference in Las Vegas. Congratulations once again to Team Stupid Land Clowns on your award-winning entry!

Watch the video on our UNF Multimedia Club webpage.

Comm Connect Alumni Spotlight- Tyler Wailes

“There is wonder everywhere you go. When you think like that, life becomes that much more magical.” says Tyler Wailes, who is officially a UNF alumni. Wailes made her mark at UNF because of her drive and determination to work hard and to never give up. She completed several internships to set her up for incredible career options right out of college. Wailes interned with the School of Communication and created the TV show Inside Swoop 90 from scratch; she wrote, edited, and anchored her own show to keep students informed about what was going on in the School of Communication and other activities on campus. She also had an internship with the Jacksonville Sharks and Action News Jax which gave her hands-on experience as a reporter and managing social media.

Wailes story doesn’t stop there. She was also granted the opportunity to study abroad for a semester at the University of Hertfordshire in England. She traveled to 9 different countries and claimed that this was the best experience she has had in her life so far. “It was during this time that I truly realized that anything is possible. If you want it, you’ll get it. It most definitely won’t be given to you, you’ll have to work hard for it. But it’s worth it if it’s what you love.” In Wailes free time, she loves to play the piano and write music. She has always had a passion for musical theater and had the opportunity to be a part of the University’s first ever musical theater production… Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 musical.

Wailes received 5 job offers from all over the country and decided to stay local and accept a job as an associate producer with Action News Jax. She certainly has big things coming for her in the near future.

When asked what she would tell her 16-year-old self, that is exactly what she would say—just be kind.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Matt Nguyen

Matthew was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and moved to Jacksonville in 2003. He is currently getting his Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and is on track to graduate in the spring of 2020. Matt’s proudest accomplishment is that he has been working for Vystar Credit Union for 10+ years and not many people in college can say that. Some advice Matt would give to his 16-year-old self is to take school more seriously. Whatever you do, do it with a purpose and with intention.

Matt’s hobbies include any and all sports; he loves golf, football, basketball, and so much more! A pivotal time in Matt’s life was when he left his job of 10 years for a roofing job, and 1 month later he was let go. For the first time in 10 years, he was unemployed and didn’t know what to do next. He was going through a rough patch in a relationship at the time as well, but soon enough he found the motivation to not dwell on what life threw at him, but to give him the strength to get back on his feet. Since then, Matt has started to work out consistently, dedicate his time and money to finish school, and is working full-time back at his original job.

The objective of this competition was to look at local news from a generational point of view and produce a news show that would be appealing to a younger audience. The show they produced placed third against the powerhouse journalism schools such as the Syracuse Newhouse School of Journalism, Arizona State's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, University of Southern California Anneberg School of Journalism (the top three winners from 2019), and many other high-profile communication schools. Ryan Gulick, Tyler Wailes, Lauren Paradis, Jennifer Saliba, Doriel Gale, and Alex Rodriguez worked hard and are reaping the rewards; an invitation to the BEA conference in Las Vegas and a $1,000 prize.

To watch the Inside Swoop submission, go to UNFTV  www.unftv.com and click on the “UNF Multimedia Club” tab. You can view both Disrupt the News show and the UNF BEA 48-hr film festival 1st place winner as previously announced.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Anderson Bobo

Anderson Bobo is a 22-year-old student-athlete here at the University of North Florida. He is a captain on the cross country and track team and his major is Communication with a focus in multimedia journalism. Despite being dyslexic, Bobo has excelled in school and is on track to graduate in the fall of 2020. Three years from now, he would like to be working at a media outlet or news station making videos and creating content. “Wherever life takes me is where I will go. I’m ready for an adventure.” His coach, the opportunity to run Division 1 cross country and track are what brought him to UNF. “This was something I dreamed about in high school so when the opportunity came about I couldn’t pass it up.”

Bobo’s proudest accomplishment was placing 7th in the ASUN conference 10k last spring. In the spring of 2018, he broke his ankle which required surgery; 7 screws and a plate. This race signified the end of his “comeback” and everything he had accomplished up to that point in his running career. If Bobo could give advice to his 16-year-old self, he would say work hard when you’re supposed to and stay true to yourself. “I am a firm believer that everything in my life has happened for a reason and has made me the person I am today.”

Rashad Clark is currently a senior and will be graduating this spring with a degree in Production. He is originally from Atlanta, Georgia but has lived in multiple places across the US and Europe because his father served in military. His hobbies include writing and producing his own music.

Rashad’s proudest accomplishment is the fact that he is graduating in less than 3 months. “I left school for about two years because I just wasn’t happy with what I was pursuing and the direction I was headed. Fortunately, I found a love for production, so I’m glad I decided to come back and stick it out.”

Three years from now Rashad would love to be shooting and editing for television and film. He is also planning on shooting films of his own on the side. At this point, he would like to continue to intern and work with as many production companies as possible. “Knowledge is key,” Rashad says. Advice he would give his 16-year-old self is do what you love and don’t let anybody else dictate your future.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Alyssa Fort

Alyssa Fort is a senior at the University of North Florida and is studying Multimedia Journalism with a minor in film. She is currently an intern at Cox Media Group and spends most of her time working and focusing on school. Alyssa’s hobby includes cooking; she claims that it is a form of therapy because she isn’t worried about anything except making sure the food comes out just right. Three years from now, Alyssa wants to be on tour with her own podcast. To get there, she plans on taking every radio and media opportunity she is given, starting her own podcast, and continuing to make connections.

“My proudest accomplishment would be going to and excelling in college. I slacked in high school and some people didn’t think I would go to college. My first year of college, I became the editor for my community colleges newspaper. It was nice to show myself that I can do anything I put my mind to.”

Advice Alyssa would go back and give to her 16-year-old self would be: what you’re doing now doesn’t define you. It is okay that you don’t know what you want to do yet. Don’t listen to the negative people.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Kaitlyn Bowers

The spotlight for this week is Kaitlyn Bowers. Katie is a 20-year-old senior at UNF. She is majoring in multimedia production with a minor in film. Ultimately, her goal is to become a filmmaker, specifically a documentarian. In three years, she plans to be in Atlanta working on her film production career, whether that means working on sets doing grunt work or filming her own movies. She intends to seek every opportunity to work in production because experience is imperative.

“A pivotal moment came at an appropriate time in my life. I was in my documentary production class here at UNF and my professor, Dr. Jillian Smith, helped me realize that my passion is filming documentaries. Before this class, I didn’t know what type of film I liked to do. With her advice and guidance, I feel confident in knowing.”

Fun Facts! Katie’s hobbies include bonding with her dogs and playing Nintendo Switch. Two of her biggest pet peeves are people interrupting other people and aggressive drivers. If she could eat one meal for the rest of her life, it would be the tortilla soup from California Pizza Kitchen.

A Film to Recommend: Midnight Traveler (2019, 1h 30m)

The film is about family, refugees, human dignity, human rights, compassion and justice.

If any of the above-listed words touches your heart, I’d like to recommend a documentary film entitled Midnight Traveler, which, in my view, deserves an Oscar for best documentary.

Using three mobile phones, an Afghan family chronicles their three-year long, desperate quest for a home, as they flee from their war-torn home country to Hungary via Iranian desert roads, Turkish forests, and Bulgarian and Serbian refugee camps.

It will probably make you see refugees through new eyes. It also will help journalism and video production students realize that what matters most is what stories you have to tell, not necessarily what equipment you have to use. The documentary is available on PBS and popular video streaming platforms. Its official trailer is viewable on YouTube: Midnight Traveler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTT-duEoRdc.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Jesse Scales

Jesse Scales is a junior here at the University of North Florida majoring in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in film. During his free time, Jesse enjoys playing video games, making videos, streaming, and wrestling. Three years from now, Jesse hopes to be in Atlanta with a production job living his dream. With all the opportunities Atlanta has to offer, Jesse feels as if this will be a great first step towards his career.

Interesting facts about Jesse: His two biggest pet peeves are people never accepting that they are wrong and loudness. He would rather work a perfect job than win the lottery. “I want to be able to have fun with my work. My dream job is to make movies the way I want to make them. I guess in simple terms it’s to be an accomplished filmmaker. I would also love to have the ability to do charity work with no financial worry.”

Advice Jesse would give his 16-year-old self would be to not live for other people. “Live for yourself. Stop taking on other people’s issues and don’t sacrifice your own happiness for others.”

The next Comm Connect edition will publish March 23, 2020.

Enjoy your spring break!

Comm Connect Spotlight, Jaclyn Caruso

Jaclyn Caruso is a student at the University of North Florida and is double majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Psychology. She is a single mother of two, works full time as a personal instructor, part time with Sherwin Williams paint store, and is a full-time student.

Jaclyn’s proudest accomplishment is her oldest child, Owyn. Owyn qualified for the Junior Olympics this year for rhythmic gymnastics at the age of eight. She is super down-to-earth, outgoing, polite, and smart. Jaclyn had her a month after turning 19. Everyone expected her to be a stereo-typical teen mom. But Jaclyn proved them wrong. “I can’t be doing such a bad job if she is as amazing as she is. I beat all the stereotypes and I’m raising a determined, head-strong, confident kid. She is my greatest accomplishment.”

As a teen, Jaclyn was in an abusive relationship. When she had her second child, she realized her life had to change. “We had two beautiful kids and two dogs and a white picket fence. I was supposed to be happy, wasn’t I? I didn’t want my kids thinking this was ok or that this was what love was, so I left.” She did not have a job or an education so enrolled in school, qualified for scholarships, and received a full ride. “We all are so much happier. It completely changed the course of all of our lives. I didn’t plan to leave. I just did. I evicted him and enrolled in school and got a full-time job all in the same day.”

The next Comm Connect edition will publish March 30, 2020.

Summer Internship Application Deadline Extended

If you are planning to complete an internship this summer 2020, the deadline for your internship application has been extended from April 1 to Friday, May 1.

With many of our internship sites working remotely now, it has become difficult to contact supervisors and to get the applications completed. That is why we have extended this due date.

Also, even though the application forms say, "no electronic signatures," applications will be accepted as long as the "Letter of Intent" is on the company's official letterhead.

Applications can be found under "Forms" on the banner the Communication Internship website.

Once you have all of your application paperwork completed, you can scan it and email it to commstu1@unf.edu .

Your application will be processed as soon as we can. Remember, the faculty and staff are working remotely, so it may take longer than usual.

If you have any questions, contact Prof. Bobbi Doggett, internship coordinator, at rdoggett@unf.edu

Comm Connect Spotlight, Meagan Bragdon

Meagan Bragdon is a senior at UNF. She is studying communication with a focus in public relations and is minoring in marketing. Her goal is to go into the non-profit side of the industry after graduating. In Meagan’s free time, she likes to play the cello, read, paint, and she Ioves the outdoors. If she could live anywhere, it would be in a country-style area so that she can have a small farm. It doesn’t have to be in the US, but could be in New Zealand, Switzerland, or potentially Poland.

“My proudest accomplishment is graduating high school with my AA. I was the first in my family to get a college education and I did it two months before I graduated high school.”

Three years from now, she hopes to be established in a career for a company like Wounded Warrior Project. Her goal is to have paid off most of her student debt and to start looking at buying a home or some land.

Advice Meagan would give her 16-year-old self is that it is important to be driven and dedicated and to never settle. But she emphasized to not take life so serious. “Enjoy these moments with your friends because it doesn’t last forever. Take pictures, stay up late, swim in the river, and don’t stress about everything so much. It all works out.”

Comm Connect Spotlight, Daisy Dee

Daisy Dee is a junior at UNF majoring in Advertising with a minor in Political Science. Daisy grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. She is 21 years old and works in customer service at Publix. Her hobbies include being in or around water as much as she can. Lying by the pool or beach is her favorite way to pass time.

In three years from now, Daisy wants to work as a brand liaison in the advertising department for a big company. This would grant her the opportunity to reach out to influencers on different platforms and create visions for the company’s new releases or rebranding statements. She would have the ability to work up contracts, visions for product launches, and work with household names without managing them.

Advice Daisy would give her 16-year-old self is to do your homework. “Many of our freshman courses are just expanding what we learned in high school. Apply yourself no matter what grade you are in and create some sort of structure to your life. It will not only benefit you now, but it will benefit your future as well.”

When asked to describe UNF in six words or less Daisy said “Filled with opportunity, resources and guidance.”

April 13 Edition

Ashley Washington named Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor

Ashley Washington, academic advisor for the School of Communication, has been named the Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor for 2019-2020. Ashley's hard work and dedication to faculty and her responsiveness to students are contributing factors in earning the award.

Academic Advising gives the award once a year to a member of the Academic Advising Council at UNF. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding contributions to the field of
academic advising, according to Academic Advising's website.

Summer Internship "Breaking News"

Senior Communication Students,
There has been questions regarding the School of Communication's internship program for this summer. Our internship class (MMC 4975) is still on board, and in fact several students have already sent in their completed applications.

There will be some changes to the program, though. Instead of the 210 hours required for completion, students will be required to only complete 145 hours for their internship site. The remaining 65 hours will be accomplished through assignments and reflection. This lower number allows internship sites the opportunity to offer specific projects which may be less time intensive. (Please note that the internship application has not been updated yet with these new hours. We are in the process of doing this, but the current application forms are still valid.)

In addition, the Provost, Dr. Simon Rhodes, has stated, “For student registered for courses involving experience learning (internships...), UNF will allow students to continue in these experiences if the host site or agency is willing and able to continue" as long as the student feels comfortable doing so.

This means that our internship sites do not have to conduct the internship through remote means. This decision by our provost allows our students to conduct face-to-face internships, as long as both the student and the organization feel comfortable with this situation. (We do highly encourage social distancing though.)

Many sites have stated they are willing to take interns this summer and that is posted at the top of their site page on our Internship website.

If there is no notice, that doesn’t mean the internship site isn’t available, it just means it has not contacted us yet.

The tentative deadline to apply for an internship is May 1. However, we understand that with the current “Stay-At-Home” order, many sites may need additional time, and we will accommodate as best we can.  Applications can be found under “Forms” on the internship website.

If you have any questions, please email Prof. Bobbi Doggett, internship coordinator, at rdoggett@unf.edu.

Stay safe and healthy.

Summer and Fall Communication Internships

The University of North Florida School of Communication is accepting Summer and Fall Interns.  We're looking for Public Relations students, Multimedia Production and Multimedia Journalism students to work remotely in the summer and on campus in the fall.  Students will be working with Professor Ken Thomas in the production of content for "Inside Swoop in 90."  Additionally, the Public Relations interns will be working with The School of Communication to promote its activities throughout the year using its social media platforms and will also promote the "Inside Swoop" brand on out social media platforms.

We know in these unprecedented times students are completing their requirements under unique circumstances, and The School of Communication is here to do what we can to assist students.  Please go to the Communication Wordpress approved internship website to find out specific information about our internships. If you have any questions contact Professor Thomas at k.thomas@unf.edu.

Survey Participation Requested

Student Evan Maslin, who is in the Hicks Honors College and International Studies and Economics, is conducting a survey with a group of students and is interested in distributing it to members of the student body. The survey has four focal areas; climate change/sustainability, food (in)security, housing (in)security and civic engagement. Two of these areas, housing, and food insecurity, are especially critical due to the impact COVID-19 has had on students.

Upon the completion of this survey, Maslin and his team will compile a comprehensive report that will be used to better inform decisions impacting students.

They will begin officially administering the survey on Monday, April 13, and conclude on Friday, April 24.

Please take time to participate in the survey.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Patrick Orr

Patrick Orr is studying Public Relations at UNF. Along with the responsibilities that come with being a full-time student, Patrick is a lifeguard and works at a local tennis store called Go Pro Tennis. His hobbies include playing tennis, swimming, skating and mountain biking at Hannah Park. Patrick’s biggest accomplishment is graduating with two diplomas; his high school diploma and an A.I.C.E diploma from Cambridge. In three years, Patrick wants to continue his education towards a master’s degree.

Advice Patrick would give his 16-year-old self is to make the most out of every day. “Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, that is where you will see the most growth. You will get the opportunity to make memories that will last forever and it will be worth it.” If Patrick was given the choice to win the lottery or work a perfect job, he said he would work at the perfect job. He stated that wealth is measured in happiness and if he worked the perfect job he would enjoy every day.

Summer Internship Changes

Senior Communication Students, there has been questions regarding the School of Communication's internship program for this summer.

Simon Rhodes, has stated, “For student registered for courses involving experience learning (internships ... ), UNF will allow students to continue in these experiences if the host site or agency is willing and able to continue" as long as the student feels comfortable doing so.

Bobbi Doggett, internship coordinator, at rdoggett@unf.edu

Comm Connect Spotlight, Gabby Rohan

Gabby Rohan is a student at the University of North Florida pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Communication with a concentration in public relations and a minor in sociology. Gabby was enrolled at A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts for most of her education before starting college and has a strong background in photography and digital art. She is skilled in leadership, public speaking, digital art and writing for public relations. She chose Public Relations as her focus to combine her passion for creating, writing and people.

Advice Gabby would give her 16-year-old self is to not be worried about going to an art school because it’s a tough field to make a living. “You will find something else to channel your passion for art into.” When asked to describe UNF in six words or less, Gabby said it is “where I found my people.”

Comm Connect Spotlight, Anjelicia DiSalvo

Anjelicia DiSalvo is a Communication major with a focus in public relations and is on track to graduate in the fall of 2020. She is originally from Daytona Beach but moved to Jacksonville in 2017, following in the footsteps of her two older sisters who went to UNF, as well. She said UNF just immediately felt like a second home. She has not only fallen in love with the school, but the city and the people she has met.

Some of Anjelicia’s hobbies include doing yoga, hanging out with friends and going to the beach. Advice Anjelicia would give her 16-year-old self is “At the end of the day, it is what it is. Don’t spend your life worrying about things you can’t control. Instead, focus on the things that you can control and what really makes you happy.”

Some fun facts about Anjelicia: her biggest fear is losing her tongue, her two biggest pet peeves are when people chew with their mouth open and when people are late to their own plans. When asked if she would rather work the perfect job or win the lottery, she chose the perfect job because working hard for the money you earn allows you to understand the value of money.

UNF requires masks on campus

To protect the health and safety of the Osprey community, all faculty, staff, students and anyone else on UNF’s campus must wear a mask at all times in all indoor and outdoor areas. Employees working alone in their offices and students who are alone in a room are the only exceptions

The use of cloth face coverings can potentially slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. It is our shared responsibility to do everything we can to protect our fellow Ospreys, and we appreciate all of your support to protect our community

UNF has launched the #MaskUpOspreys social media campaign to promote the effort.

For more information on the importance of wearing masks, including proper ways to handle and wear face coverings, please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Racial injustice seminars begin with remembering Ax Handle Saturday

A series of webinars about racial injustice will begin with remembering Ax Handle Saturday will feature speakers from Jacksonville and UNF from noon-1 p.m. Wednesdays through November 13.

PRSSA offers “Beginning Your Career During Uncertain Times”

It’s hard enough to start a career in PR without having to overcome the devastating and disruptive impact of a global pandemic. Students need answers to so many questions:

- How do you build a network when all of the events are virtual now?
- How do you get an internship - or that first job - when informational meetings and job interviews are only done remotely?
- Which social media platforms offer the best return in terms of building connections and creating an effective professional profile?

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, PRSSA will offer “Beginning Your Career During Uncertain Times.”

Moderated by Professor Lawrence J. Parnell of George Washington University, this panel is designed to give actionable advice and answers to these and many related questions.

To register, go to: https://prsa.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_s5-dJKhWSY6Rrk6Ytr6pgw

“Growing up in South Florida, I’ve realized the different types of connections you can make down in Miami,” Villamar said. “Whether if it’s for business, modeling or just friendships. People in Miami are all about business and want to help bring each other up. They live a lifestyle that comes from humble beginnings and giving back to others.”

Three years from now she sees herself working a fulfilling position for a social media marketing company.

Villamar started to apply to colleges at age 16. Thies is when she realized what she wanted from life. “I realized I want a life where money isn’t a problem and I am able to give back to others and my community.”

Villamar’s proudest accomplishment is being the first of her family to attend college. When asked to describe UNF in six words or less, she said “UNF is leading individuals to success.”

This survey is an integral part of the semester-long campaign for UNF’s Student Health Services.

We ask that you please take a few minutes to complete this confidential survey.

Spotlight on student Emily Martin

Emily Martin is a 21-year-old senior at UNF working towards a bachelor's degree in Communication with a concentration in multimedia journalism and a minor in psychology.

According to Martin, a pivotal time in her life was 2 years ago. “I had to quit my job and move back home to Alpharetta, Georgia for a semester,” she said. At that time, she realized that a 9-to-5 job was not for her and that travel and adventure was.

“Three years from now I see myself living in a different country,” she said. Martin is now back in Neptune Beach, Florida, and after graduation she plans to save enough money to move outside of the United States. If given the chance to live anywhere, it would be Italy. This is a dream she plans to fulfill.

Martin said that her biggest fear is not living life to the fullest. Her proudest accomplishment was moving to Florida from Alpharetta on her own and getting a dog. Her spare time is spent at the beach, thrifting, gardening and reading.

Spotlight on student Hope Reister

Hope Reister is a 21-year-old senior at UNF working toward her bachelor’s degree in Communication with a focus in advertising.

When asked about her greatest accomplishment, Reister said that it is going to college. “I am a first generation 4-year university college student in my family and will be the first to graduate with a degree,” she said.

Reister transferred to UNF from Flagler College during her sophomore year because she believed the curriculum and atmosphere were more in line with what she wanted out of her college experience.

“I chased my passion for advertising and now I study it,” Reister said. “That’s something Flagler didn’t offer.”

In addition, Reister also spoke about how she joined Greek Life to be involved on campus and in the community. This has truly made her experience at UNF more worthwhile.

In three years, Reister hopes to be working for an advertising firm in her dream city – New York. When asked if she would rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job, she said, “I would rather work at the perfect job. I would be happiest doing something I love every day.”

Spotlight on student Heydi Ortiz

Heydi Ortiz is a junior at UNF working toward her degree in Communication with a concentration in multimedia journalism. In addition to this, she is also minoring in both digital marketing and creative writing and is expected to graduate Fall semester of 2021.

When asked about a pivotal time in her life, Ortiz said that it was when she joined Spinnaker Media in 2018 as a volunteer.

“For one of my first stories I went to Riverside to take pictures and I wrote about why it was a hotspot for Millennials,” she said. “I knew right then and there that journalism was what I wanted.”

Since then, Ortiz has become the editor-in-chief of Spinnaker Media, which she said is her greatest accomplishment to date.

“After working at Spinnaker for three years and going through several job positions like police reporter, news editor and managing editor, I felt like I had reached the top and the only way from there was up,” she said.

After graduation, Ortiz hopes to relocate to California to pursue a career in journalism.

“If I could live anywhere I would live somewhere in California,” she said. “I am a foodie so my goal is to move somewhere where there is a diverse range of food and where journalism is prominent.”

When asked what advice Ortiz would give her 16-year-old self, she explained that it was patience.

“Not everything always works out the way you plan but the key is to adapt accordingly and know that you are good enough to make it in the world no matter what obstacle you run into,” Ortiz said.

Student Spotlight on Ashley Cetin

Ashley Cetin is a senior at UNF pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Communication with a concentration in public relations.

A pivotal time in her life was when she realized she wanted to pursue a career in the non-profit organization industry.

“During my time in high school, I volunteered with many different non-profits and even had an opportunity to go to Africa for a mission trip,” she said.

She shared details about her experience at a specific nonprofit organization - Hope at Hand.

“Hope at Hand is a non-profit in Jacksonville where we taught therapeutic art poetry and yoga to at-risk youth,” she said. “I worked with this non-profit for close to four years.”

Because of her non-profit organization involvement in high school, she was nominated for, and won, the Herbert W. Scheidel Community Leadership in Action Award through the Scheidal Foundation in 2018.

“This experience not only gave me an amazing opportunity to pursue my degree, but also gave me an opportunity to be a part of an amazing community,” she said.

In three years Cetin sees herself continuing her involvement in this field of work as an event coordinator for a great non-profit organization of her choice. When asked what advice she would give her younger self, regarding her future endeavors, she said, “I would tell myself to keep pushing, never give up and eventually one day your dreams will come to fruition.”

The UNF School of Communication is accepting applications for Spring 2021 interns. The internship program provides an essential real-world experience throughout the semester for our students enrolled in the senior internship program.

For Multimedia Journalism & Digital Video Production students, SoC particularly needs an on-camera sports reporter/anchor.

The intention is to expand the brand of Inside Swoop -- a student produced, news-entertainment-sports, daily 90-second show -- provides hands-on experiences for students aspiring to be anchors, reporters, producers or directors. SoC is seeking students who have a strong interest in broadcasting.

Contact Professor Ken Thomas at k.thomas@unf.edu for more information. Visit the SoC's internship site  for the senior internship requirements and applications.
