Join the JaxbyJax Writing Workshop Today, April 8th

WHO: Writers from Jacksonville and surrounding areas who want to improve their writing while helping others to improve, as well.

WHAT: Gentle critiques of poems and short prose pieces by and for beginning, student, professional, and published writers.

WHEN: Today, April 8, 2019 at 6-9 P.M.

WHERE: FSCJ. South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32246, Building T, Room 101

The JaxbyJax Literary Arts Festival VI will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

One of our goals this year is to encourage Jacksonville writers who have not yet taken part in this annual celebration of "Jacksonville writers writing Jacksonville" to participate. To that end, UNF, FSCJ and JaxbyJax has teamed up to host monthly writing workshops at various locations around the city so that both student and non-student writers from the Jacksonville-area community can find out more about the festival, and also polish their writing through gentle critiques of their work.

Please bring 20 copies of your poem or short prose piece. You'll get to hear your work read aloud by another writer, and then receive spoken feedback and written suggestions to take home. JaxbyJax Writing Workshops are free, and open to the public (high school and older, please.) Participation in the workshop does not guarantee acceptance into the juried literary festival.

Student email account changes

In order to provide better collaboration with the Office 365 tools, students will soon have an email account in the same environment as faculty and staff. During this transition, students will have two UNF mailboxes, their old one that uses "N-number@ospreys.unf.edu" and a new one that uses "N-number@unf.edu." Starting Tuesday, May 7, email communication from University systems will be delivered to the @unf.edu account only. Students will click the "Email" tile in myWings to access their new email account.

Beginning May 7, students will want to log in to their Ospreys account by clicking on the "Old Email" tile in myWings and activate automatic forwarding so any email still being sent to their Ospreys account is redirected to the new account. It's recommended students also turn on an "Out of Office" notice that directs email senders to contact them at their new @unf.edu address. Both the UNF and Ospreys accounts will be active for a period of time to enable transition to the new Office 365 environment. Communication will be sent prior to the Ospreys account being deactivated.

Student Complaints and Appeals

All departments on campus take student complaints seriously, maintain a log of complaints, and analyze the log for patterns. Students who would like to raise a complaint to the department chair may do so via e-mail or other means. There is also an anonymous complaint file that can be requested at the front desk in the department's lobby. More information about grade appeals can be found on the UNF One-Stop Student Services webpage.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Morgan Keene

Portrait photo of Morgan Keene outside.Currently working as the Marketing Director for the UNF Swoop Troupe, senior communication student Morgan Keene is combining her background in Public Relations with her passion for theater to pave a path to a successful and rewarding career. Responsible for running the groups social media accounts, Keene crafts weekly posts that promote the club's upcoming events. She has also designed several posters that have caught the eyes of students on campus; advertising events such as "The Book of Hims," a poetry showcase that debuted in the Spring 2019 semester, and "Krio Descendants Union Freetown," a fundraising event that took place in April 2019. Her ambitions don't stop there though. Keene has taken the skills and knowledge she has obtained from her education through the School of Communication at the UNF to create press packages for projects such as, "UNF Musical Theater Club Presents ‘"Into the Woods"' and "Shakespeare in the Park at Nocatee." Along with this experience, it is her talent to construct professional and easily accessible websites that puts her above and beyond the rest, showcasing her eye for design and highlighting her knack for presenting information in an organized manner.

Many things have changed for Keene since beginning her college career in 2017. When asked to describe UNF in five words or less Keene responded with the phrase, "it's where you find yourself." Originally her focus was that of journalism. "I have always loved journalism," she says. "Especially the art of reporting." It was after she got involved with the theater club on campus though, that her focus began to alter. "I knew I had no interest in being an actress but, I realized that I was never going to be as happy as I was working in theater." Her dreams of becoming a press agent soon began to flourish. After researching UNF Public Relations, she found this was the program that had all of the tools necessary to equip her with the ability of reaching her goals. Thanks to her hands-on education and the real world experience the School of Communication provided her, today Keene confidently composes thoughtful and professional work for events on campus and in the working world. Along with her hard work and impressive resume, Keene will take her talent to do incredible things.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Ryan Gulik

Senior communication student Ryan Gulick is an individual who possesses many talents, the most unique being his ability to both build and restore musical instruments. When he's not in the studio filming his news updates for Inside Swoop in 90 or in class learning from some of Jacksonville's finest production professors, Gulick can be found carrying on a years-old family tradition. "I have a long history of woodworking in my family,'' he said, "and have enjoyed attempting to carry on the legacy, so to speak. Currently, I am restoring a guitar from 1948 that I bought for five dollars at a yard sale." Not only is Gulick using this kind of creativity to build music from essentially nothing, but he also thinks outside of the box when it comes to education.

Gulick's college career began when he was just fourteen years old. Completing nearly all of his general education courses at FSCJ before graduating high school, moving his education to the University of North Florida was only natural. What was he was going to study there? That was the real question. Being only eighteen at the time, he took his inquiry to Google to find his answer. "I asked what the highest paying jobs were for those with Bachelor's degrees," he joked. "It informed me that I needed to become an Electrical engineer." After meeting with the advisors of the Engineering Department though, Gulick quickly realized that wasn't the path for him. "So," he continued, "I joined the School of Communication, and haven't regretted it in any way."

With dreams of working as a producer at a local television station after graduating UNF's Communication program, Gulick is gaining as much experience as he can before entering the competitive field of broadcast. During the Summer of 2019 he worked as an intern with the Jacksonville Broadcaster's Association, filming and editing together interviews of broadcasters, both past and present. Some of his work can be found on the association's website. As mentioned previously, Gulick can now be seen in the campus news show Inside Swoop in 90 for which he produces and anchors. His work can be viewed every Tuesday and Thursday on Inside Swoop's Facebook page and on Spinnaker T.V. Be sure to keep an eye out for Gulick at your local news station in the future. With his talent and passion for news, he will surely be there sometime very soon.

Comm Connect Spotlight, Rileigh Merritt-Dietz

Rileigh  Merritt-Dietz earned her undergraduate degree in English while at UNF, and eventually received her master’s in Philosophy at UF. For the past 3 years, she has been an adjunct instructor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Next month marks one full year that she has been an academic advisor in the School of Communication. Being an advisor allows her to have a more personalized role in the lives of her students. Seeing the positive changes and growth is what makes her job as an advisor so special.

Rileigh and her brother, Jordan, grew up bonding over a PlayStation controller. From playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot on the first PlayStation to playing Spyro and Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation 4, the two of them have traveled across the video game universe together. Just a few weeks ago they came up with idea of creating a video game channel of their own! The idea for the channel is still new, and the plans for what should be produced are in the works, but she’s excited for what’s to come. The channel is called Dietzy's Dungeon. Rileigh is not only a fan of video games but also strategy and tabletop games, her go-to being Warhammer 40k. Nothing is set in stone, but she mentioned a possible collaboration with UNF’s video game clubs, mentioning that it would be fun for both parties. Feel free to check out Rileigh and Jordan’s page and support their content! @Dietzy's Dungeon

Comm Connect Spotlight, Ashley Washington

As an Academic Advisor for the School of Communication, Ashley Washington is one of the most beneficial resources a communication major has at UNF. Always dressed with a smile and a willingness to extend a helping hand, Washington is dedicated to assisting students succeed in their academic careers. "My advice is that students visit me at least once a term," she says, "so I can get to know you and help you reach your academic goals." Not only does she aid students in designing individualized schedules that are the most conducive for their personal success, but she also guides students on what steps to take before and after graduation, provides internship information and opportunities, presents clubs and organizations a student may want to consider joining, and much more. When she's not in the office, Washington can often be found at Mickler's Landing searching for shark's teeth or enjoying some good Mexican food with her husband.

Being a UNF alumni herself, Washington earned her Bachelor of Science in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations and her Master of Education in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education Administration right here on UNF's campus. Her first job after graduation was with the YMCA of Florida's First Coast, an experience she looks back on fondly. It wasn't long though, before she accepted a position as an Admissions Coordinator at UNF. She eventually worked her way up and transitioned into her position as an Academic Advisor. At the end of the semester, she will celebrate her five-year as a UNF employee. When discussing what things a communication major should know while pursuing their degree, Washington advises students to "Get to know your professors. Prior to working at UNF, I still reached out to my former professors for advice, letters of recommendation, or just to grab coffee." Making connections and forming an understanding of what a professor expects from you is essential in crafting a successful semester.

Make a point to stop by Ashley Washington's office this term, and every term following, to optimize your college experience and guarantee an efficient semester! To make an appointment, visit your myWings. Questions can also be sent to ashley.washington@unf.edu .

This week's Comm Connect spotlight is Shelby Kessel. From Southern Florida, Shelby moved to North Florida to experience a different side of the state while remaining close to the beaches. As a student in the School of Communication, Shelby has chosen a multimedia production concentration. She is pretty excited about the multimedia opportunities provided at UNF. One of them is her own internship project that she is working on with other students under the guidance of Prof. Goodin. Check out the School's social media for more info about Shelby's project.

Shelby enjoys practicing yoga on the beach and nibbling goodies from a charcuterie board with friends. A motto that she lives by is a quote from Jack Black in the school of Rock, "Dude? I service society by rocking, OK?" Like most students, Shelby is still looking for the answer to "what should I do with my life?" As an eager student, she sees her learning opportunities are endless. "Each day I feel like I'm getting closer and closer to finding my life's purpose", which is all anyone can ask for.

Shelby has developed a love for the west coast of the United States. If given the opportunity to travel, she would return to California. "l would have to go visit Palm Springs. Where else can you lay by the pool and also go snowboarding all in one day?" On this dream trip, her passion for music would lead her to the Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival. One piece of wisdom she would share to incoming students is "be yourself. That's the coolest thing you can be."

Comm Connect Spotlight, Mayeska Sand

Along with her kind demeanor and ability to produce quality work, Senior Communication student Mayeska Sand's wide range of world experience allows her to take on any task and complete it with professionalism and ease. Spending most of her Summer 2019 with the Jacksonville Sharks as a Public Relations Intern, Sand worked both in the office and on the field providing fans with daily updates and live game day coverage. Sand was responsible for managing the team's website and social media accounts as well as creating ribbon board advertisements for sponsors that were shown in the arena every game day. Her talent does not stop there. Sand is quite the photographer, providing the Sharks some of their best action shots that were ultimately used as promotions on their website, social media, and in advertisements. Sand has taken the skills she acquired during her time with the indoor football team and is now working with the Jacksonville Jaguars!

"I want to be happy no matter where I am in life and be thankful for every moment I've had," says Sand. She decided at a young age that it is important to find fulfillment in the company she keeps and the work she does. "I want to experience new places, go bungee jumping, meet new people with different mindsets and so much more." It was UNF's location that brought Sand to Jacksonville. Having both the city and the beach within fifteen minutes from one another has provided the public relations major with ample opportunities. The skills she has acquired during her time at UNF and with the Jacksonville Sharks will take her a long way with the Jacksonville Jaguars!

Comm Connect Spotlight, Doriel Gale

Born and raised right here in Jacksonville, it was only natural for Senior Doriel Gale to pursue her education in journalism at the University of North Florida. Gale knew from a young age that she wanted to work in news and has been taking steps to gain experience in the field ever since. Along with producing, anchoring, reporting, and editing campus news shows Inside Swoop and Inside Jacksonville, Gale interns with the local news station, News 4 Jax. Here, she assists producers in writing morning broadcasts and shadows reporters on location. "Seeing everyday life in the news world," she says, "is a confirmation for me that I want to be in the news industry for the long run."

Gale's dreams of becoming a reporter were inspired by the great Oprah Winfrey in elementary school. She says she would watch the show every time it was on the family TV and even went on to play a talk show host in a middle school Black History Month play. Now, Gale hopes to follow in her idol's footsteps to spread positivity and "be a role model to young adults." Following graduation in December, she plans on taking the invaluable opportunities she has gained from UNF and News 4 Jax to pursue a successful career and achieve her childhood dreams.

Comm Connect Faculty Spotlight, Patricia Booker

Currently a visiting professor of journalism, Patricia Booker has been teaching at the University of North Florida on and off for the last twenty years. She says it was Dr. Paula Horvath who first brought her to campus and immediately she felt energized by the students. She got her bachelors degree in American studies with a concentration in communication and then earned her masters degree in print journalism. Booker says it was during this time that she found her passion for creative nonfiction.

Professor Booker will be participating in JaxByJax, an annual literary festival that celebrates the literary culture and talent in Jacksonville's literary. This will be her fourth year as a featured writer. "I will be reading a new piece that's relevant to the #MeToo movement," she says. The event will take place on November 16th at the Jasonville Public Library. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and there will be an afterparty following at MOCA at 5:00 p.m. Along with being kind and eating well, Professor Booker's biggest advice for students is, " to redefine success for yourself, and remove the monetary component. Yes, having enough money is important - but so is being kind, living healthy, and educating yourself about the community and the world."

Student Complaints and Appeals

All departments on campus take student complaints seriously, maintain a log of complaints, and analyze the log for patterns. Students who would like to raise a complaint to the School Director may do so via e-mail or other means. There is also an anonymous complaint file that can be requested at the front desk in the School's lobby. More information about grade appeals can be found on the UNF One-Stop Student Services webpage.

Comm Connect Student Spotlight, Jennifer Saliba

It’s Senior production student Jennifer Saliba’s strong work ethic and ability to produce some of the campus' most innovative video productions that make her stand out in the production track.

For the past four months, she has been producing creative hype-videos for UNF Athletics, helping to advertise the different sporting events around campus. Her work can be found across the program’s social media platforms. Jennifer has also helped her sorority Alpha Phi make videos that recap sisterhood events, a soccer tournament, and recently for recruitment, focusing on their philanthropy and sorority.

Saliba will be graduating on December 13th  after which she will spend the holiday in France. When she returns to the U.S., she plans on pursuing a career in film. “I want to make movies and music videos,” she says. She is certainly on the right path too accomplish her goal. During her time at UNF Saliba wrote, produced, directed, and edited a short film for Campus MovieFest, a seven-day long contest. She placed 16 out of 68 and her film was screened for a live audience.

Comm Connect Student Spotlight, Kathryn Clark

With prospects of creating advertisements for companies such as “aerie” or other body positive brands after graduation, advertising student Kathryn Clark is making the most of her senior year. Along with fine tuning her “Adobe Illustrator” and “InDesign” skills, she is a part of the creative team in her advertising campaigns class and will help them present their project at the end of this semester.

Clark has been creative since childhood. She remembers dressing up with her cousin, who is the Inside Swoop Sports Anchor, when they were young and acting out popular movies. Even now, in her spare time, she loves to sew, paint, garden and create “nerdy cosplay stuff.” “I really enjoy trying different hobbies where I get to exercise my creativity,'' she says. This certainly gives her a leg up when crafting unique and relatable advertisements.
