About the Department Chemistry

Degrees Offered

As detailed on our programs of study page, the Chemistry Department offers an ACS-accredited B.S. degree in Chemistry and typically graduates 20-25 majors per year. The undergraduate areas of concentration are general chemistry, materials chemistry, pre-medical professions, and biochemistry.

Undergraduate Research

A focal point of the department's direction is to significantly increase undergraduate research opportunities for students and thus the profile of the chemistry program. In recent years, the chemistry faculty have increased external funding significantly and as a result a majority of upper level undergraduate students now do research. Currently, over 30 students conduct research each year. To go along with this emphasis in undergraduate research, we have significantly increased the available startup funds for newly hired faculty members. There are several opportunities to display undergraduate research each year starting off with the Natural Sciences Poster Session in the Fall semester. This event is jointly sponsored by the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology Departments to showcase student research work with their faculty mentors. Students have opportunity to speak to their peers and others about where their work has taken them.

Facilities and Instrumentation

Teaching labs, research labs, and faculty offices are on the second and third floors in the south wing of the Science & Engineering Building, which opened in 2004. Each tenured or tenure-track faculty member has a 400 sq. ft. research lab with fume hood located near to their office. Renovation of space in the west wing of the Science & Engineering Building (to be completed in 2019) will increase the space for the department by 10,000 sq. ft. The department has a wide array of analytical instrumentation ( that is available for both teaching and research, and can thus be factored into decisions about start-up funds. UNF recently established the Materials Science and Engineering Research Facility (, which houses a variety of instrumentation in addition to that available in the Chemistry Department.
