Hi there! My name is Sam. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and while I often wish I lived somewhere with mountain views and a true autumn season, this city will always feel like home. I started attending UNF in 2013 as an elementary education major with a lifelong goal of becoming a teacher. However, after a few student teaching experiences, I realized that the major might not be the perfect fit for me. It took me a year or two to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life after that. Eventually I landed on the field of psychology with a special interest in its application in educational settings. I am very thankful for the academic advisors and career counselors on campus who helped me discover my goals during those early years of my degree, and I believe that’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about higher education.
I pursued my bachelor’s degree while working on campus in both part-time and full-time roles. Before graduating, I worked in the Office of the Vice President of Administration & Finance, the Student Enrollment Communication Center, and the Department of Housing and Residence Life. I’ve held other jobs outside of UNF as well, but I continue to come back in both educational and professional roles because I love the community on campus. I have found that most everyone who chooses to be a part of the Osprey nest is driven, kind-hearted, and focused on positive progress, and those are the kind of people I want to continue to be surrounded and influenced by in my own pursuits.
My first role at UNF after earning my Bachelor’s degree was in the Advising Office for the College of Arts & Sciences as an Academic Support Services Coordinator. I was able to focus my passion for educational leadership here, and now I get to work in the same wonderful office as an Academic Advisor. The majors I advise for include Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, and I enjoy each of them and the unique students they bring into our office. My main goal as an advisor is to ensure student success and well-being, because just like each student that walks through our doors, I once needed every bit of support and guidance I could find to successfully choose and complete my degree. I know how stressful it can be to select the right classes, apply for internships, build a resume, or handle a difficult personal matter while keeping your grades up. I relied on many forms of support that UNF offers, and now I feel lucky to give back and provide some of that same support to current students.
Outside of work, I truly am an old soul who enjoys granny-esque hobbies like cross stitching, porch-sitting, and obsessing over my house plants. Countless hours of playing Minecraft would be my one exception to being born in the wrong generation! My husband and I frequent Jacksonville’s many parks and beaches to find cool new places for our pup to roam. I also opened a fun little calligraphy shop on Etsy called Ever Inscribed in 2017, and I am currently pursing my Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration here at UNF. There is never a dull moment in my world!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do to help you in your path to academic success. We are all cheering you on here in COAS Advising and we want to see you soar!
