China has recently become the world’s largest lender to developing countries. But to what extent are China’s activities indicative of a new approach to South-South cooperation and does the country offer an alternative to Western aid? This talk examines the drivers and impacts of Chinese foreign assistance with a specific emphasis on Africa. The presentation closes with some tentative conclusions about the effects of the changing global landscape of development finance.
