Dr. Jan Meires is a
Professor in UNF’s Brooks College of Health. She teaches doctoral students in
Nursing (DNP) and Physical Therapy (DPT). Dr. Meires studied nursing at Wichita
State University (BSN, MN) and the University of Florida (FNP). She received a
doctoral degree from UNF in 2001.
Prior to becoming a full
time academic, Dr. Meires practiced as a cardiovascular clinical specialist /
family nurse practitioner. She is a member of the American Nurses Association
(ANA), Florida Nurses Association (FNA), National Organization of Nurse
Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and the Southern Nurses Research Society (SNRS).
She was inducted as a community leader in Sigma Theta Tau (STT) and was
selected as a Research Fellow by the North American Primary Care
Research Group (NAPCRG) in conjunction with Society of the Teachers of
Family Medicine (STFM).
Along with her teaching,
research and practice duties, Dr. Meires has been involved in CBTL for more
than 25 years. As part of her Community Scholars project, Dr. Meires redesigned
advanced practice clinical courses to include community based culturally
relevant topics. In these courses, students work as integral members in an
inter-professional team to provide primary care to underserved populations. Her
students develop original, creative, evidence-based, culturally competent
texts, photos with captions and videos for use in a mobile motivational health
and wellness applications. Students also assess the quality and usefulness of
many web based applications (APPS). Students in these courses also write and
publish evidence based manuscripts in peer reviewed primary care journals
on a number of topics for community-based health care.
