Alan Harris Headshot

Alan Harris, PhD - Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering

Alan Harris is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Harris completed his bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Central Oklahoma, his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, both at the University of Oklahoma. In graduate school, Dr. Harris’ work concentrated on optical communications, with a focus in mobile free-space optical communications systems.  Following graduate school, he taught as an adjunct at both the University of Oklahoma and the University of Central Oklahoma before joining the University of North Florida.

Natalie Arce Indelicato, PhD, LMHC - Assistant Professor and Clinical Director, Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Dr. Indelicato earned her BS in Psychology and Master’s and Ph.D. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. Her clinical and research interests consist of college student development and mental health, which include first-generation college students, college women’s relational health, trauma recovery, and eating disorders.

Chitra Lakshmi K Balasubramanian, PhD - Assistant Professor, Clinical & Applied Movement Sciences

A native of New Delhi, India, Chitra Lakshmi K Balasubramanian completed her undergraduate studies in Physical Therapy from Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Manipal, India. She practiced as a physical therapist for several years in a variety of adult acute-care, adult and pediatric home-health, and pediatric rehabilitation settings. In 2008, she graduated with a PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Currently, Dr. Balasubramanian pursues an active research agenda at UNF in the area of walking and balance rehabilitation for individuals diagnosed with a stroke and older adults.

Leslie Kaplan, PhD - Associate Director, Hicks Honors College

Dr. Leslie Kaplan earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy from Tufts University, a master’s degree in English from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. in Folklore and Folklife from the University of Pennsylvania. She started teaching at UNF in 1999 and has also held some administrative positions in both the Writing Program and the Hicks Honors College. She is currently the Associate Director of the Hicks Honors College.

Sophie Maxis, PhD - Assistant Professor, Leadership, School Counseling and Sports Management

Sophie Maxis, PhD is an assistant professor of School Counseling in the Department of Leadership, School Counseling, and Sport Management within the College of Education and Human Services. Dr. Maxis completed her Ph.D. in Counselor Education - School Counseling and Guidance at University of Florida, Gainesville in 2011. She earned the M.Ed. and Ed.S. in School Counseling and Guidance from University of Florida and a B.S. in Mathematics Education from Oakwood University, Huntsville, Alabama. For her doctoral research, she examined the relationship between school counselor self-efficacy beliefs about their general practice at urban, underperforming high schools and the rate of Black males’ high school completion.

Bonnie Pope, PhD - Assistant Professor, Nursing

Bonnie Pope was a successful product of Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, FL, having received her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctorate in Nursing from that institution. Her career has spanned many decades and includes time as a nurse, a director/supervisor of health care services, and beginning in 2006 till the present, an Assistant Professor at the University of North Florida. She currently provides community clinical over site for part of the Regular Prelicensure Nursing students and oversees their final community capstone project. She also teaches the 5th semester Community Partnership class.

Justin Sipes - Coordinator, Co-Curricular Community Engagement

Justin Sipes received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and his Master of Arts in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Bowling Green, Ohio.  He is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership doctoral program with the College of Education and Human Services at University of North Florida.
