Grants and Contracts Awarded

(2015-17) - Nemours Children’s Clinic Internal Research Grant - Nemours Children’s Hospital, Jacksonville, FL. Exercise Snacks and Glutamine to Improve Glucose Control in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes. In this proposal we will study the feasibility and efficacy of the use of exercise and dietary supplementation with a non-essential amino acid – glutamine – a component of most protein supplements, on the regulation of plasma glucose homeostasis in a clinical setting of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Dr. Churilla will be an advisor on all aspects of the exercise portion of these studies. He will advise, teach and also model the exercise by providing a short video on how the best way to perform these activities to be doable and feasible for the participants at their homes. Dr. Churilla will be involved in the analytical portion of the studies as well. $20,000. Roles: PI Darmaun, D. and Mauras, N. Exercise Physiologist / Consultant / Churilla, JR.

(2014) – University of North Florida – Faculty Research Grant. ‘Climatic Change in
the U.S. and its Association with Physical Activity and Obesity’.
$30,000.00. Roles: Principal Investigators – Churilla, JR., Baynard, C., and Loh, CP.

(2013) - Department of Health - Florida Occupational Safety and Health Mapping Project - Contract. This report provides a description of the total gross charges related to occupational injury and illness from Florida hospital inpatient discharge (HID) and emergency department (ED) data from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2010 utilizing display methodology. University of North Florida. (Co-Principal Investigator). $10,000.00. Roles: Co-Principal Investigator – Churilla, JR and Johnson, TM.

(2012-2014) - Brooks College of Health Dean’s Research Professorship. Constructing a
Proxy Measure for Metabolic Syndrome Using Cross-Sectional, Population-Based
Survey Data.
University of North Florida. $54,000. Role: Churilla, J.R. - Co-Principal Investigator

(2009) - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Behavioral Risk Branch - Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) - Contract. Conducted epidemiological research examining the associations between physical activity, sedentary behavior, and metabolic health utilizing both the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). Three papers were published stemming from this work: 1) Comparing Physical Activity Patterns of Hypertensive and Nonhypertensive U.S. Adults; 2) Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity and Insulin Concentrations in U.S. Adults; and 3) Muscular Strengthening Activity Patterns and Metabolic Health Risk Among U.S. Adults. $15,188.00.
Role: Epidemiologist and Team Leader Ford, E.S. Epidemiologist - Churilla, J.R. (Principal investigator on projects 1 and 3, consultant on project 2).
