I suspect this section was designed to enable each of us (professors) to list our accomplishments, but I have trouble looking into a mirror and getting an unbiased view of myself.  I could list the fact that I have been here at UNF longer than your parents have been alive, or that I am retired from the military, or that I have practiced law (and still do) in Jacksonville for a long time, but I would prefer that you to evaluate me in a different manner.  I once inquired of a student the characteristics of a good teacher and her response surprised me.  She stated that she could differentiate a good teacher from a poor one after five minutes in a class.  She stated the most important factor in the quality of a teacher is whether or not the teacher cared about teaching.  I think that I still care. Remember the "mirror" which I spoke of earlier if so I suggest you ask others (previous students) if I really do.  I believe that a subject can be both interesting and educational.  I believe that the most important experiences you have at UNF may happen outside the classroom.  I believe you can accomplish whatever you really want to accomplish. I believe we we have too many smart people in the world and too few good people.  I believe that our backgrounds and circumstances may influence who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.  I believe your time at UNF like your time on earth is a journey.  Enjoy the trip don't focus only on the objective or you will miss the best part.  I believe it is most important to strive to be a good man and a great father.  I suggest you forget everything you just read.

This section is optional so I have decided to omit it.  The same applies to the next several sections.  No offense is intended.  On most days my son thinks he has a great dad.  There is no higher award or critical a judge.
