Theory and Development of Systems (Software Process) - The description of commonly used software life-cycle process models and the contents of institutional process standards; definition, implementation, measurement, management, change and improvement of software processes; and use of a defined process to perform the technical and managerial activities needed for software development and maintenance.

Software Project Management - The planning, organization, and monitoring of all software life-cycle phases, to ensure that software development projects are appropriate to an organization, work in different organizational units is coordinated, software versions and configurations are maintained, resources are available when necessary, project work is divided appropriately, communication is facilitated, and progress is accurately charted.

Social and Professional Issues of Computing - The basic cultural, social, legal, and ethical issues inherent in the discipline of computing that define the computing professional's responsibilities and the possible consequences of failing to attend to those responsibilities.

Biography

Dr. Solano holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from Florida State University. She did her undergraduate work at Penn State University. Upon completing her doctoral studies, she worked in Tallahassee for the Board of Regents of the State University System of Florida, from 1975-1979. She arrived in Jacksonville in the Spring of 1979 and worked for a time as a consultant with Information Systems of Florida, Inc. She has been with the University of North Florida since the Fall of 1980. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Computer and Information Sciences and after thirteen years just stepped down from the position of Director of the School of Computing, in the College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction.

Dr. Solano’s research interests focus on the design and development of contemporary information systems, with a particular emphasis on managing information technology projects. She has a number of publications and a long list of presentations to her credit. She has also remained active in the information technology industry by engaging in selected consulting opportunities. She has taught courses in computer programming, systems analysis and design, database administration, systems performance and evaluation, and project management.

The first recipient of UNF’s Outstanding Faculty Service Award, Dr. Solano has been active on campus and served on a myriad of committees and task forces throughout her years at the University. Committed to the importance of faculty in university governance, she served as president of the University’s Faculty Association on three separate occasions, served a term on the University’s Board of Trustees, and as chair of the Statewide Advisory Council of Faculty Senates served a term on the State University System of Florida Board of Governors.

Dr. Solano’s commitment to the computing profession is evident in her record of volunteer service to ABET, a professional body serving the public through the promotion and advancement of education in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. She has ensured that all four of the University of North Florida’s undergraduate computing programs have been reviewed and accredited by ABET. Additionally, since 2000 she has served as an accreditation program evaluator and subsequently as chair of teams of evaluators visiting and reviewing programs across the country. She has also been actively involved as a training facilitator for new program evaluators. In 2010, Dr. Solano accepted a position on the Executive Committee of the Computing Accreditation Commission. In this capacity, she chairs the Criteria Committee of the Commission.
