NSSE Survey, Spring 2019

What is the NSSE?

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) measures the participation of first-year and senior students in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. UNF uses the results to understand how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.

UNF has participated in the NSSE in 2017, 2014, 2012, and 2009. UNF results consistently show that UNF students are well engaged by the five benchmarks of effective educational practice: academic challenge, active/collaborative learning, enriching educational experiences, student-faculty interactions, and a supportive campus environment.

Who can participate?

All UNF first-year freshman and seniors are invited to participate.

How do I complete the survey?

Search your Ospreys.unf.edu email account for the keyword "NSSE" on or after February 14. If you are included in the survey sample, you will have received an email invitation from President David Szymanski containing a link to complete the survey online starting on February 14. Please also check your spam folder, just in case it has been filtered out of your inbox.

Starting on February 14, eligible students will also see links to complete the NSSE through Canvas and their MyWings alerts.

How do I claim my gift card?

If you are one of the first 1,000 students to complete the NSSE, you will receive an email from us notifying you of when you can pick up your $10 gift card to use on campus at Starbucks or Chick-fil-A. The email will typically come the day after you complete the NSSE.

To pick up your gift card, come see Amanda Kulp in Building 1 (next to Peace Plaza), second floor, suite 2700. You must have your UNF ID when retrieving your gift card.

Why should I participate?

When you take the time to tell us about your undergraduate experience at UNF, we take your responses very seriously. We have used past survey results to inform a number of key changes and improvements, including enhancing our first-year advising model, informing student affairs event programming, making changes to first-year writing courses, and comparing student and faculty perspectives of teaching practices.

When is the NSSE open?

The survey is available from February 14 through April 9, 2019.

Why is there a message about NSSE when I log into Canvas and MyWings?

We want to make taking the survey as easy as possible for you, so a link to the survey is included in your Canvas and as an alert in MyWings.

How many emails will I receive to invite me to complete the NSSE?

UNF will send a total of six emails. After completing the NSSE, students will not receive any additional emails.

What is student engagement?

Student engagement is the amount of time and effort students put into their studies and educationally purposeful activities. It is also how UNF deploys its resources and organizes the curriculum and other learning opportunities to get students to participate in activities that research studies show are linked to student learning.

What is a "good" response rate?

In 2017, 53% of UNF first-year students and 46% of UNF senior students responded to the NSSE. See NSSE Response Rate FAQ for more information about what makes a good response rate.

How many institutions participate in the NSSE?

Across the U.S., 504 higher education institutions are participating in the NSSE survey in 2019.
