Welcome to our first VP Communique, a monthly email and web page designed to keep Administration & Finance employees up to date with projects and initiatives that impact you and our students, faculty, and staff. Each month, I will share some of the exciting news underway by our various departments. I welcome your ideas for the mini-articles that will be featured in future VP Communique publications. Submit your content suggestions for the next VP Communique by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. In the fall, I'll ask for your feedback to see if the VP Communique has been informative and useful to you.
I am so excited that our division has completed another successful year! As we begin the new fiscal year, I hope each department realizes their importance to both our division and the University. Please take a moment during the next week and reflect on what you have personally accomplished and how you have helped your department and our division advance this past year. Sometimes with our hectic activities we forget to appreciate our own amazing contributions. Thank you for all that you do for UNF!
As you know, the state funding process has presented a number of challenges to us. I think it is important to remember the University is working hard to raise our performance scores, particularly the measurements of "freshmen six year graduation rate" and "2nd year retention rate GPA above 2.0". In future editions of VP Communique, I will address what we are doing to improve these metrics. As President Delaney has said, budgets will be tight and we need to truly evaluate every purchase. Also, we should remember that we are each an ambassador for UNF.
Below are a few projects that I would like to highlight this month and a list of staffing changes.
Optical Store Expected to Open July 15
The College Optical Express, located in Building 8, is expected to open on July 15. It replaces the Cell Phone Repair (CPR) store. Some of the services College Optical Express will provide are eye exams, contact lens fittings, repairs, adjustments, and consultations. Eye exams are $39 and contact lens exams (includes eye exam) are $79. Glasses are made in the on-site lab with a fast turnaround. They will have a large selection of designer frames and prices to fit every budget. Students, faculty, and staff can also purchase designer and prescription sunglasses. Questions about the new optical store can be directed to Shane Borden at email@example.com or (904) 620-1337.
New Learning Management System Canvas
Following the selection of Canvas as Florida's official common learning management system by the Board of Governors, UNF conducted an open review and decided to adopt Canvas. Over the next academic year, the campus will transition from Blackboard to Canvas. Canvas is a next-generation LMS and provides an intuitive interface, improved mobile experience, reliable, stable performance, and no downtime for upgrades.
There is a pilot currently running with about four hundred summer B students using Canvas. Feedback will be gathered from the students and faculty and used to improve the adoption experience for the fall term. Both Canvas and Blackboard will be available for the fall 2016 and spring 2017 terms. Blackboard will be decommissioned on May 31, 2017. For more information visit the UNF Goes Canvas page and the Student Resources page.
Arena Bridge Demolition
The Arena pedestrian bridge demolition is underway. If you recall,
the bridge was hit by a vendor's truck about a year ago and after settling with
the insurance company, the decision was made to remove the bridge. Currently,
we are in the final phase of demolition; UNF Drive will be reduced to two lanes
during this phase. Following demolition, repairs to the plaza concrete and
installation of new lights will start. When completed at the beginning of
August, the area will have a more open and spacious look and feel. Take a walk or drive and see the new look.
