More than $2.3 million has been raised by The Hope Fund since 1994 to support area agencies in their efforts to provide basic necessities like food, clothing, and utilities to struggling Northeast Florida residents.
The Hope Fund is a collaborative effort between Jacksonville’s local daily newspaper The Florida Times-Union, the University of North Florida Department of Communication, and Hands On Jacksonville.
Stories highlighting area families in need are written by the Department of Communication’s multimedia journalism students and are published between Thanksgiving and the end of January each year. Readers are encouraged to donate to the fund and 100% of all donations – no monies are deducted for administrative costs -- are distributed by Hands On Jacksonville to a number of nonprofit agencies like the Hubbard House, the Clara White Mission, and the PACE Center for Girls.
Dr. Paula Horvath-Neimeyer, a lecturer in the multimedia journalism concentration, founded The Hope Fund and each year supervises a team of advanced student reporters enrolled in her fall Applied Journalism class while they interview, write, and edit their Hope Fund stories.

BEAM (Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry) is a non-profit social services agency supported by churches and generous individuals, service organizations, and businesses that care deeply about their neighbors in need. We help temporarily at-risk beaches area residents--children, adults, seniors-- stay in their homes by helping with short-term rent and utility assistance and with basic needs like food and personal items. In addition, we provide back to school supplies and clothes at our annual BACK TO SCHOOL WITH BEAM event and dental work for needy beaches children.
