New Policy Rationale: Currently we do not have a process nor a policy to reboot computers on campus in a scheduled manner. Computers are only rebooted when users choose to reboot them or during power outages. However, in order to fully apply security update and patches, computers need to be rebooted often. A computer can be infected by malware or becomes corrupt, even though the update or patch has been downloaded and applied, but the machine has not been rebooted to complete the update process. IT Security has drafted a UNF Reboot Policy that should be published and implemented with a new process as soon as possible. Regularly and systematically rebooting machines is critical to protecting our computing environment in a world of increasing threats and actions by hostile actors. Please forward comments and questions regarding the policy to firstname.lastname@example.org.
