The Vision of the College of Arts & Sciences is to provide each student opportunities for transformative learning experiences.
The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest of the five colleges that make up the University of North Florida. Because it provides instruction in the liberal arts, the intellectual basis upon which rest the applied curricula of the four other professionally-oriented colleges, it constitutes the core of the university.
Instructional responsibilities for the college’s almost 300 faculty members extend from the lower level general education program, through diverse majors for undergraduates, to a growing number of graduate programs. The college consists of fifteen academic departments, and also houses a variety of centers and programs, including Pre-Law and Pre-Med programs.
The University of North Florida is a regional comprehensive state university of approximately 16,000 students. Our in-state tuition is one of the lowest in the nation, and our student faculty ratio is approximately 22:1, making class sizes very conducive to individualized attention. The faculty of the university are committed to the "teacher-scholar" model; each member of the faculty is actively engaged in pursuit of a scholarly agenda, all hold earned doctorates or terminal degrees in their fields.
The UNF campus is sited on approximately 1300 acres, with a large portion of that acreage set aside as a natural preserve in which may be found miles of the Robert W. Loftin nature trail system. We are surrounded by thousands of acres of "greenway," with the Atlantic Ocean to our east, huge estuarine areas to our north, and a National Heritage River - the St. Johns - running through the heart of the city. The greater Jacksonville area has approximately 1.2 million citizens; we are a growing metropolis, within easy driving distance of Atlanta, Miami, and Orlando.
The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to diversity of every sort -- racial, ethnic, cultural, gender, sexual-orientation, age, disability, disciplinary approach, and so forth -- in both its faculty and student bodies. We are active partners with UNF's Commission on Diversity in seeking to meet goals to enhance our university profile. We believe that in the 21st century world, there can be no excellence in education without exposure to and appreciation of difference.
