Counseling Center

Mission Statement

The mission of the Counseling Center is to enhance students’ total educational experience by providing a confidential and supportive environment where student concerns can be shared and explored. Center services assist students with their personal development and enhance their potential for academic success.

The purpose of the Counseling Center is to provide mental health services to the university community, including: assessment and referral, individual, group counseling and crisis intervention to currently enrolled UNF students; consultation and outreach services to faculty, staff, parents, and students. These services are offered in order to:

  • Facilitate student adjustment and personal growth as they make decisions and assume responsibility for life on a college campus;
  • Assist students to develop new strategies to resolve problems and develop more effective behaviors to cope with life stresses.
  • Provide preventative and educational programs in areas which impact students’ mental health, such as interpersonal communication skills, self-esteem, and relationship issues.
  • Assist students with more intensive psychological concerns through supportive counseling, maintenance or referral.
  • Provide consultation, support and training to faculty and staff who may encounter students in psychological distress.

Making Your First Appointment

Initial Screenings are made by stopping by or calling the Counseling Center at (904) 620-2602. Screening appointments may be scheduled up to five days in advance, Monday-Friday at the following times: 10:30 a.m., 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. depending on staff availability. Appointments are 90-minutes long and this includes time for completion of initial paperwork.

Your first appointment will provide you with an opportunity to talk confidentially with a counselor about your immediate concerns. Your counselor will talk with you about some of the reasons you scheduled the appointment and will evaluate what services or resources will be most helpful for you. Some students find that talking with a counselor once is sufficient to resolve the immediate concern. If further services would be beneficial, these will be discussed and a recommendation will be made by the counselor. These additional services may include resources offered by the Counseling Center or referral to another campus or community resource.

The Counseling Center also provides emergency consultations to students with urgent mental health concerns between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please call (904) 620-2602 if you have an immediate need to meet with a counselor. After 5 p.m. and on weekends, please contact our After-Hours Crisis Hotline. Please see our Emergency Services webpage for more information about the After-Hours Crisis Hotline and other resources.
