Please upload your poster as a single PowerPoint slide! Before you submit your files, please re-read the section below entitled "IMPORTANT! New poster creation and submission procedures for SOARS 2021."

If you have an audio presentation, you must submit a transcript of your presentation as a Word document for ADA compliance purposes.

Most people have uploaded to the SOARS 2021 portal with no problem; however, 2 people have experienced submission upload "freezes." If you have any problem uploading your files, please submit your general information, including authorial and co-authorial information, faculty mentor information, etc., and your abstract via the portal form before the deadline. Then immediately email OUR@unf.edu with your poster, audio files, transcript, and video link attached. Identify yourself in the email (name and N-number). We will follow up with you.

SOARS 2021

Like SOARS 2020, this year's showcase will be a virtual conference, in which student research and creative projects are exhibited on a sophisticated website. Projects will be displayed as posters with supplementary audio files and audio transcripts, wherein students describe the research or creative project in their own voices. In place of or in addition to the audio presentation, student researchers are encouraged to prepare a video presentation, recorded on YouTube or Vimeo. The video link will be embedded on the student project's individual web page.

Would you like to see some poster and audio/video presentation examples? Check out the SOARS 2020 Virtual Conference website! To see how these projects have been archived and shared with a global audience, see the UNF Carpenter Library's SOARS Digital Commons website.

The SOARS 2021 Early Submission portal for Fall 2020 graduates, open from December 7, 2020 to January 6, 2021, is now CLOSED.

Questions? Watch this SOARS 2021 introductory video or contact Kaitlyn Minnicks at OUR@unf.edu.

SOARS 2021 Abstract and Submission Portal is now open -- NEW! The abstract and poster submission deadline has been extended one week!

The SOARS 2021 Virtual Conference Abstract and Submission portal is now open and will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2021

The portal password is: S*@rs2021Sub!

SOARS 2021 Virtual Conference submissions should be made by a student author ONLY. If the SOARS submission is a team project with multiple authors, only the first-named student author should submit the poster and associated media files. ONE research or creative project = ONE SUBMISSION.

BUT HOLD IT RIGHT THERE! Please don't rush things by trying to upload your poster and associated media files until you've first read the new creation and submission procedures just below!

IMPORTANT! New poster creation and submission procedures for SOARS 2021

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) has a specific poster formatting procedure for SOARS 2021, as well as new abstract, poster, and media file submission procedures. This year, you will submit everything at once using the SOARS 2021 Abstract and Poster Submission portal. The portal will be open from Monday, February 15 at 8:00 am to Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 11:59 pm. Before you enter the submission portal, you will need to:

  1. Have your final abstract written, saved, and ready
  2. Create your poster in PowerPoint (custom sized to 48" wide x 36" high); save it (last name_width x height); and have it ready
  3. Create your audio file in MP3 format (if you're submitting one -- and we hope you do); create the audio file transcript in Word; and have these files ready
  4. Create your video in YouTube or Vimeo (if you're submitting one -- which will delight us); and have the URL ready

For specific details, see the new SOARS 2021 Poster Formatting and Media Submission guidelines.

Need some help in creating your poster in PowerPoint? Check out our poster construction tutorial.

NEW! Projects of Merit

For SOARS 2020, the OUR and Graduate School conceptualized and introduced a new award: Project of Merit. This designation, based upon the SOARS abstract submission, was intended to recognize research and creative projects that are particularly innovative, significant, or compelling. Last year, 14 undergraduate submissions were selected as Projects of Merit, and 19 were named Staff Picks. Eight graduate submissions were named Projects of Merit.

This year, for SOARS 2021, Projects of Merit will be selected by teams of OUR students, Graduate School staff, and faculty
based upon evaluation of the submitted abstract, poster, and media files. Your abstract should be error-free, crisp, and well-written, clearly describing your research project (inquiry, investigation methodology/data/analysis, and production of knowledge/findings/conclusion) in 200-250 words. Your research poster should be error-free, interesting, informative, and visually appealing. You should record an audio presentation or embed the link to a YouTube or Vimeo video presentation that you have prepared. Please submit your script if you make an audio or video recording or enable captions for your video presentation. You should upload your files to the SOARS 2021 Abstract and Poster Submission portal no later than 11:59 pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2021

Undergraduate AND graduate researchers whose submission has been selected as a SOARS Project of Merit will receive a $100 research prize. If a Project of Merit has multiple authors, each undergraduate and graduate student co-author will receive a research prize.

NEW! Nominations for Undergraduate Researcher of the Year and Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year are now being accepted

The designation Undergraduate Researcher of the Year, announced each year during SOARS, is intended to recognize the undergraduate who is particularly outstanding in terms of dedication, persistence, work ethic, enthusiasm, and passion for research. The recipient of this award is a role model for other undergraduate student researchers. Students nominated by faculty mentors as Undergraduate Researcher of the Year will be notified of the nomination by email, and asked to submit a three-page essay describing their research experiences as well as their philosophies, qualities, and practices which have made them so successful as an undergraduate researcher. The Undergraduate Researcher of the Year will receive a $1,000 prize. Ask your faculty mentor to nominate you by sending a one-page endorsement of your work to OUR@unf.edu. Yes, more than one faculty mentor can nominate you!

The OUR also recognizes the Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year during SOARS. This award recognizes the most outstanding faculty member among many who have excelled in supporting, encouraging, and guiding their undergraduate student researchers. The recipient of the Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year award exemplifies UNF's values in terms of teaching, research, and service. Faculty members will be notified by email if they have been nominated as Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year, and asked to submit an abbreviated CV highlighting their mentoring experiences and a single-page essay describing the philosophies, qualities, and practices which have made them such successful undergraduate research mentors. Multiple undergraduate researchers can nominate the same mentor, but please do not nominate MORE than one mentor. The Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year will receive a $1,000 prize. Undergraduate student researchers, please nominate your mentor by sending a one-page statement to OUR@unf.edu describing why your mentor should be named Mentor of the Year.

Nominations will be accepted until Monday, March 15, 2021 at 11:59 pm. NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
