Course Description:

This course focuses on the design, development, and implementation of interactive media in instructional settings. Topics include: hypermedia programs, compact disc technologies, digital images, digital audio, digitized video, and distance education. Students will evaluate commercial programs and develop custom applications using HyperStudio, PowerPoint, Inspiration, and the Web.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the characteristics of various compact disc technologies
  • Describe the characteristics and uses of various graphic formats
  • Create & manipulate digital images from a variety of sources including: scanners, digital cameras, the Web and CD-ROMs
  • Incorporate digital images in a hypermedia program
  • Incorporate digital audio, MIDI, and CD-Audio in a hypermedia program
  • Recognize copyright issues related to multimedia
  • Create a Web page utilizing text and images
  • Research information related to multimedia
  • Outline management techniques for hypermedia projects
  • Design evaluation instruments for hypermedia projects

Course Evaluation

The evaluation for EDG 6906 is based on course projects, a quiz, a research paper, a take-home test, and a final project. The final grade is based on the total number of points on record 2 weeks after last class. A grade of I (incomplete) will only be issued if the student has significant reasons for not completing the required work. If an I is issued it must be completed by the end of the following semester or the grade will be permanently changed to an F.

Course Projects

Inspiration Project

Create an Inspiration map/plan of a hypermedia project. The map should present information on a specific topic and display graphics. The map/plan should include notes and a sub-linked information or other map.

Audio Project

Create a folder that contains the following elements:

  • An existing digital audio file
  • A recorded speech file
  • A digital audio file edited from two other digital audio files
  • A portion of a CD-Audio
  • A MP3 file
  • A MIDI file

Imaging Project

Create a five-card program presentation containing the following elements:

  • A scanned image
  • An image created with a digital camera
  • An image from the Web
  • An image manipulated with a graphic editor
  • A link to a graphic Web site.

Video Project

Create a folder that contains the following elements:

  • An animation sequence of at least 5 images
  • A morph created from two different images
  • An edited video file

Web Page Project

Create a Web page that contains the following elements:

  • Text
  • Graphics
  • External links

Final Project

The final project should be a hypermedia presentation program that would be of use to you in your professional role. It could be an instructional program for peers or students, or a program that could be used in another aspect of your work. It should contain an ample amount of images and audio used in such a way as to enhance the effectiveness of your program.

Research Paper

Select a topic in the area of interactive media and/or its use in instruction and prepare a written report. The topic for the paper needs to be approved by the course instructor. The paper should be prepared in a professional manner, free of spelling, typographical and glaring grammatical errors and use APA format sans abstract. The body of the report should be no more than 1500 words in length. A minimum of three references should be used. The report should be saved in RTF format and e-mailed to the instructor.
