PURPOSE
The purpose of UNF's Philosophy Club is twofold.
First, it
is to provide students with a chance to explore their
philosophical interests and to learn from one another
in social
settings beyond the classroom. Second, it is to
equip students and alumni for success in philosophy
and affiliated fields.
ACTIVITIES
CAREER
DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS
As both UNF's
department website and this
short APA essay suggest, a degree in philosophy will help put
you in
better position not only to make a living, but to lead a life worth
living. With these ends in mind, the Philosophy Club hosts
Career Development Meetings during both the Fall
and the Spring semesters.
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
As the excellent performance of
philosophy majors
on exams for graduate school suggests,* a degree in philosophy
is a terrific stepping stone towards a career in a profession that
specializes
in research
and public speaking. To help you develop the
skills that will lead to success in such professions, the Philosophy
Club
conducts monthly Professional Development Workshops.
* Summaries of the data regarding the performance
of philosophy majors
on not only the GRE and the LSAT, but the GMAT as well, are available here,
here, and
here.
PROFESSIONAL
AND SOCIAL EVENTS
Like
any other field, part of what makes doing philosophy enjoyable is the
chance to
get paid for doing something you love, and part of what makes it
enjoyable is the chance to develop meaningful relationships with people
who share your interests. To get a feel for whether you might
like to pursue a career in the
field, the Philosophy Club will help you get involved in
various
affiliated events, such as (i) professional
conferences,
like those coducted by the American
Philosophical Association or by the Florida
Philosophical Association, (ii) student conferences, like the
Northeast Florida Student Philosophy
Conference, which UNF has hosted for more than a decade, or
(iii) department
colloquia,
at which you can discuss contemporary philosophical research
with those working in the field. If you are
interested in
something less 'formal', the Philosophy Club will help you get involved
in other events, such as (i) a philosophy
slam
at Fuel Coffeehouse, (ii) a reading group,
(iii) coffee
or lunch with department faculty, or (iv) informal
get-togethers
with other students.
FLORIDA
STUDENT PHILOSOPHY BLOG
If your schedule is tight, you can always get
invloved online! The Department
of Philosophy
and Religious Studies
at UNF hosts the Florida
Student
Philosophy Blog. The blog is committed to conducting quality
discussions of issues
philosophical, religious,
moral, political, and scientific. It has an international audience, but
its contributors are undergrads,
grads, and alumni from philosophy departments throughout the state of
Florida, as well as invited guests affiliated with these departments.
