DISNEY

DISNEY.COM

For any organization interested in creating a website, the web designer for that organization should be familiar with the web design principles. According to Top-eBooks-Galaxy, some main key principles that need to be implemented into a website are: Balance, Emphasis, Line, Space, Colors, and Shape.

One organization that successfully implements all these principles into its website is Disney.com. Disney is an entertainment establishment that is popular among many people especially little kids and teenagers. Disney provides a website that allows the public to access online activities, news, information, shopping, and contests.

I will discuss the different ways Disney.com applies the web design principles to its website. In regard to Balance, the website displays rows and columns that are all aligned and symmetrical. This helps balance out all the content and makes the website look well organized. In regard to Emphasis, the website provides emphasis on specific content such as concerts and games that are popular among kids. Emphasis on certain content could be used as a good promotional tool because it helps catch the eyes of the user. In regard to Line, the website displays funky lines and edges which creates a fun look that kids and teens are more drawn to. In regard to Space, the graphics and text are balanced out by the space around it. There are no graphics or text on top of each other. In regard to Colors, the colors of the website are bright creating a lively look. The colors also complement each other and provide for a harmonious effect. Last in regard to Shape, the positive shapes such as the graphics are not overpowered by the negative shapes such as the empty space.

The target market of users of Disney.com consists of kids, teens, and parents who are interested in purchasing merchandise online, learning about Disney events, or traveling to Disney. "As the Web is different from print, it is necessary to adjust the writing style to users preferences and browsing habits"(www.smashingmagazine.com). I think the information on the home page successfully attracts their target market by using funky colors and easy to understand words. It also uses many different images of animated creatures and popular teen singers. The image that it effectively presents to its market is a fun and entertaining one. It is attractive from a design standpoint because it seems to achieve its goal of providing information to its users while still being easy to understand and enjoyable to look at. The website gives a full spectrum of names and pictures of products and services it provides. There is a guest services/help link at the bottom of the page that helps the public obtain additional information. However there is no link which I found for a user to provide comments or concerns. The website is successful in providing up to date information on Disneys events and products. I would say the site definitely seems fun and interesting enough for users to visit it again.
