Charles Messier (1730-1817)

Published in 1781, Charles Messier, the French astronomer, made a list of 103 "fuzzy-looking" objects that might be mistaken for comets. (He was a comet hunter!) Later, 7 more objects were added to the list by astronomers because they were described in his personal notations but had never given catalogue numbers. These objects are viewed as jewels of the night sky, delightful targets for viewing with binoculars or small telescopes. And some of the objects are even visible with the naked eye.




These images are either extracted from the RealSky--CD ( ASP ) or downloaded from the SEDS -- Students for the Exploration and Development of Space. All of these objects are visible from the mid latitude for the Northern Hemisphere observers...
