URP 6058
Urban and Regional Planning

This course covers core issues in urban and regional planning. The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the history of city planning, the basic theoretical ideas that underlie city planning practice, and some of the main topics currently debated in the field. This class gives students opportunities: First, each student will prepare a project report about complex urban or regional issues. Second, each student will learn basic demographic and GIS skills. This course will provide an overview of diverse subjects in the filed, and serve as a basis for further study in urban and regional planning. This class has no prerequisite. To accomplish these objectives, the course is composed of readings, lectures, presentations, and discussions. Students will learn content/disciplinary knowledge and skills, critical thinking, and communication.

Urban Administration

This course covers core issues in urban administration and management. In urban context, there are problems and principles of municipal administration and management. This course focuses on the environment of urban management, intergovernmental relations, urban political structure, urban policymaking, urban planning and development, decision making, urban service delivery, management process, human resources, and urban finance and budget. The purpose of this class is to provide students in-depth understanding of management and administration issues in urban context. At the completion of this course, students should learn how theoretical concepts of administration and management are reflected in a variety of administrative situations and problems, especially urban and local context. To accomplish these objectives, the course is composed of readings, lectures, presentations, and discussions.

Urban Policy and Planning

This course covers core issues in urban and regional planning. The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the history of urban policy and planning, the basic theoretical ideas that underlie city planning and policy practice, and some of the main topics currently debated in the field. This class gives students opportunities: First, each student will prepare and present a project report about complex urban or regional issues. Second, each student will join a group to study and present a policy and planning research article. Third, students will learn basic concepts of demographic and GIS. This course will provide an overview of diverse subjects in the field, and serve as a basis for further study in urban and regional planning. To accomplish these objectives, the course is composed of readings, lectures, presentations, and discussions.

Political Inquiry and Analysis

This course covers core issues in basic research methods in political sciences, emphasizing concept formulation, measurement, research design, data collection and analysis and other issues involved in professional political research.  This class will discuss basic research concepts and practice to approach real world.  Students will learn content/disciplinary knowledge and skills, critical thinking, and communication.

PAD 4027
Issues in Public Management

This course covers an introduction to the applied aspects of public administration and management. The course focuses on public management concentrating on the rise of public sector bureaucracy, organizational theory, organizational culture, types of behaviors and actors in public agencies. The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the history of public management, the basic theoretical ideas that underlie management practice, and some of the main topics currently debated in the field. At the completion of this course, students should have an understanding of how theoretical concepts of administration and management are reflected in a variety of administrative situations and problems. To accomplish these objectives, the course is composed of readings, lectures, presentations, and discussions.

MPA Capstone Seminar

A summary and integration of the knowledge, skills and values appropriate to a professional career in public administration.

Prerequisites Prerequisites: Completion of PAD 5700, PAD 6706, and all but 12 credit hours in the MPA program. It is recommended that students complete all core courses prior to commencing this course.

Study Abroad to South Korea

The purpose of this Study Abroad class is to give opportunities of learning Korean political institutions and public administration to students. Students will learn with visiting important institutions and sites of Korea, and interacting with Korean faculty and student. South Korea (Republic of Korea) has very unique history, culture, and political institutions due to important geopolitical location in the Far East Asia.
