Course Description

This course will provide you with the study and appraisal of teaching techniques, music literature, learning activities, curricular plans and materials essential to the musical development of elementary school children.



Class Meetings

The class will meet from 9:00 to 12:30 on Monday through Thursday, from June 22 to July 9. We will meet in Building 9, Room 1233.

Upon the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:



Readings

The required textbook is Integrating Music into the Classroom, Fourth Edition by Anderson and Lawrence. Melody bells are optional. Both can be purchased at the UNF bookstore. In addition to the text, outside readings are available on special topics. The readings are on the reserve in the UNF library.


Attendance and Participation

Class attendance and active participation is required and expected. New topics will be covered each class period. There will be a number of cooperative group activities that will involve total group participation.


Grades

These activities will be used to give you experience with cooperative learning and the use of models that are discussed and illustrated in class. Every member of a group is expected to participate fully in the activities.

Grading Scale

Course grades will be computed as follows:
A = 93% - 100% (325 - 350 points)
B = 85% - 92% (296 - 324 points)
C = 77% - 84% (268 - 295 points)
D = 68% - 76% (237 - 267 points)
F = below 68% (0 - 236 points)



Assignments

Class assignments will be assessed according to the Class Schedule below. All class assignments will have a firm due date. Please prepare two typed copies of your lesson plans for the days they are due. As you complete your peer teach lessons, one copy is for you to follow. The other copy is for me to follow as you teach. Following your lesson, I will return my copy to you with feedback and collect your copy for my files.

Educational Technology Center

The ETC is located in Building 9, Room 1427. Autoharps and melody bells are available. Other instructional materials are also available. The Media Section of the Carpenter Library (1st floor) has model lesson plans and videotaped lessons available for your review. Music series books, CDs, records and tapes are also available.
