- Text: Calculus, Early Transcendental Functions, Larson,
Hostetler, and Edwards, 4th Edition
- Calculator/Software:
- TI-82 or better (TI-83 recommended). TI-89's and TI-92's
are not allowed on exams.
- Maple. You do not need to buy Maple (and I suggest you don't), but if you want to use it
at home, you can purchase a student version for about $120.
- Pre-requisites:
Officially, you need to have passed a Calculus II class (equivalent to
MAC 2312). Unofficially, you should have a good grasp on precalculus, differentiation,
and integration.
- Homework:
-
Usually, homework will be assigned every Wednesday, and it will be
collected on the following Wednesday. A list of homework
assignments is available
on the website. Homework will be discussed on the day that it is
due. Late homework will not be accepted. Because there are no TA
sections for
this class, you are strongly encouraged to attend office hours.
The
only way to learn calculus is to do lots of problems (perhaps more than
is
assigned). Homework is not counted much towards your final grade (10
percent),
but if you don't do the homework, you won't learn the material, and you
will
probably fail the exams. Moral of the story, DO THE HOMEWORK.
- For each homework assignment, five problems (typically) will be
selected
to be graded for correctness. You will be told which of the problems will be
graded.
While I am willing to answer questions about the graded problems
in
office hours, I will NOT discuss these problems in class. Your
homework
grade will be based upon these graded problems AND a completion score
for
the entire homework.
-
In addition, there will be some Maple assignments. These should
be done before doing the main homework, so that you can get a feel for what
is going on.
- Exams:
There will be two in-class exams and a final exam:
- Exam 1: Wednesday, February 13, in class
Exam 2: Wednesday, March 12, in class
Final: Monday, April 28, in class
- Of course, there are no excuses for missing an exam.
- Quizzes:
There will be a take home quiz each Wednesday based on the current
homework
assignment. It will be due at the beginning of the next class. Of course, there are no excuses for missing a quiz, and
make-up quizzes will
be a rare breed.
- Grades:
The grades will be worked out as follows:
Homework 10%
Quizzes 15%
Exam 1 21%
Exam 2 26%
Final 28%
- Office Hours:
My office hours are Monday/Wednesday, 10:00-11:00, 2:30-3:45, or by
appointment. My office is My office is Building 14, Room 2709. I
am a big
fan of office hours, and especially since you don't have a TA, you are
strongly
encouraged to come to my hours.
