Student Employment at UNF

Employment of Students On- and Off-Campus (excerpted from the UNF Student Handbook, Section S 4, available online at http://www.unf.edu/student-affairs/student-handbook.html)

The University of North Florida encourages the employment of its students in part-time, temporary campus positions to provide supplemental financial assistance and to allow students to be employed in assignments which may be complementary to their academic studies or interests. Such employment is to be incidental to the student’s academic activities and is not intended to supplant the duties performed by regular (non-student) staff. Student employment is typically for a fixed term, either the academic year (August-May), one semester or summer term. This does not preclude the hiring of students for special short-term projects. It is very important that the employing department and the student have a clear, mutual understanding of the period of employment.

There are two categories of student employees: Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) and Student Assistant – Other Personal Services (OPS). Students not meeting the criteria for these programs may be employed as Regular OPS.

UNF student employment is open to all UNF students eligible to work in the United States. International students desiring employment should first contact the International Center, Honors Hall (Bldg.10)/Room 2470, (904) 620-2657. Students receiving financial aid who desire on-campus work should contact One Stop Student Services, Founders Hall/(Bldg. 2)/Room 1300, (904) 620-5555. Other students desiring on-campus work should contact the Office of Human Resources (OHR), J.J. Daniel Hall, (Bldg. 1)/Room 1000, (904) 620-2903.

UNF departments that have student employment opportunities list them with OHR. Such opportunities will be posted until filled in the Student Assistant Position Vacancy Book in OHR. Students interested in the position(s) will be sent to the hiring department(s) with their application and a “Student Assistant Applicant Referral Form.” The hiring department is to complete the Referral Form indicating the hiring decision.

All UNF student employees are covered by the State of Florida Workers’ Compensation Law (Florida Statues, Chapter 440). If a student is injured while completing a work task, the student may be eligible for medical and compensation benefits. If student employees are injured in the performance of their work, they must notify their supervisor immediately after the accident. A “First Report of Injury of Illness Form”must be submitted within 24 hours of the injury. Either party may submit the form to OHR if the other is not available or able to complete it in a timely manner. Failure to submit the form to OHR in a timely manner may result in a fine being levied against the employing department by the State Department of Risk Management.

Students desiring off-campus work should contact Career Services, Founders Hall (Bldg. 2)/Room 2039, (904) 620-2955.
