UNF Reads! Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What is UNF Reads!?

UNF Reads! is a common reading program targeted specifically at incoming first-year students as an introduction to the academic expectations of the University. As a UNF freshman, you will read the selected common reading book before arriving on campus in August.  Fall 2014 UNF Reads! selected book is  “Outliers: The Story of Success" by Malcolm Gladwell

2. Why has UNF instituted a common reading program?

 The goals of this program are

  • To create a university-wide learning community;
  • To provide students with models for academic discourse and opportunities to engage in effective discussion;
  • To demonstrate that important issues and new ideas cross disciplinary boundaries.

3. How was "Outliers" chosen?

The Undergraduate Studies Council selected the book as a way to incorporate the themes of transformation and community-based learning into a common experience for the UNF community. These are themes that the University has adopted in our  Quality Enhancement Plan. The Council members understand that the ideal selection should be accessible, interesting to freshmen, and have the potential to have wide-spread connections throughout the curriculum. A variety of factors including cost, readability, length, applicability across a wide range of courses narrowed the list down.

4. Will this book be used in my classes?

The UNF Reads book will be incoporated into many courses including The Osprey Advantage courses, the freshman Honors Colloquium, and several other general education courses. Students are strongly encouraged to read the selected UNF Reads! book because many professors will be drawing from the book to frame discussions and writing assignments. Also, there will be discussion groups, guest speakers, and other events surrounding the book that you will participate in.

All freshmen are required to purchase the book. Discounted copies of the book will be on sale at Freshmen Orientation through the UNF Bookstore.
