John Delaney's Biography John
A. Delaney became the president of University of North Florida in July
2003. Since taking office, he has worked with the Board of Trustees, faculty,
students and staff on a new vision that leads the University on a “journey
to greatness.” This journey is guided by four principles: a commitment
to excellence, focus, relevance and accountability. Excellence at the University includes identifying flagship programs that offer the greatest opportunity to provide leadership in the community and the nation. The University’s definition of excellence begins with a focus on quality instruction and learning opportunities for students. UNF’s commitment to relevance includes partnerships to help solve problems in the community and to help to increase opportunities for students and faculty. The University’s commitment to accountability is based upon the understanding that UNF has a responsibility to taxpayers, donors and students. Delaney has a well-rounded team of professionals serving on his executive staff. The most recent addition, Dr. Gerry Giordano, completes the team as the University’s provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. Giordano has served in a number of leadership positions, most recently as the dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University. As president, Delaney plays the role of UNF’s biggest advocate, frequently sharing the UNF message with the local community as well as throughout Florida. Delaney’s presidency continues a distinguished career as a public servant. He was mayor of Jacksonville for two consecutive terms. As mayor, he convinced voters to approve The Better Jacksonville Plan, a $2.2 billion improvement plan that gave the city new public facilities and other amenities. He also created the Preservation Project, a massive land conservation program that gave Jacksonville the distinction of having the largest urban park system in the United States. For his efforts, Delaney received the 2003 President's Conservation Achievement Award from The Nature Conservancy. Before being elected mayor, Delaney served as the city’s general counsel and chief of staff to former Jacksonville Mayor Ed Austin. Delaney is a graduate of Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida. Delaney and his wife, Gena, have four children. |
