When an Emergency Occurs

The University of North Florida’s Crisis Management Team (CMT) would like to take this opportunity to update the campus community on UNF’s state of readiness for emergencies.  Below you will find current activities aimed at making our campus as safe as possible. You will also find references to activities that are underway but not yet completed. Please read through these carefully.

Prevention (Let's address the problem before it escalates):

  • Student Affairs has created the SOS (Supporting Our Students) Team comprised of faculty and staff whose role is to identify and intervene in situations involving students who may exhibit behaviors of concern.  Anyone who identifies potentially disruptive or disturbing student behavior is asked to contact the Office of Student Affairs at 620-2600 during regular office hours (8am-5pm, Mon.-Fri.) or Campus Police at 620-2800 after hours (evenings and weekends).
  • The CMT is negotiating with a consulting firm to aid in long term security planning and emergency response needs.
  • The University Police Department (UPD) recently received a Federal grant to conduct advanced building threat assessments (threat assessment of all buildings were conducted in 2005).
  • The UPD is also preparing an active shooter workshop for faculty and staff.
  • Physical Facilities is working to replace door locks so that classrooms can be locked from the inside.

Communication (In case of an emergency, we’ll communicate clearly and through multiple sources):

  • Currently, emergency information can be broadcast via the building fire alarm systems, mass e-mails, mass voice mails to office phones, information on the UNF homepage and emergency back-up web page of www.unf911.org.
  • As of summer 2008, the University will also have a Code Red alert system up and running. Students, faculty and staff who have registered their personal phone numbers will receive an automated phone call on that line that is the University’s data base in case of an on-campus emergency. (See directions below.)
  • In the event of an emergency, information is also update on UNF’s main phone number, 620-1000, so callers can get the latest information.
  • The Crisis Management Team will also notify the media in the event of an emergency.
  • The CMT is also soliciting bids for an outdoor warning system which will allow broadcasts to reach parking areas, recreation fields, athletic fields, and other remote areas of campus.

Response: (We take potential emergencies seriously and act accordingly)

  • All UPD officers are trained in basic Active Shooter Response and continue training utilizing wax bullets, creating a realistic fire situation.  The UPD has conducted several scenario-based training exercises on topics such as suicide bomber, chemical leak, bomb threats, active shooters, and robberies.
  • The UPD has partnered with the Beaches SWAT Team to develop advanced training focusing on a tactical response to an active shooter and hostage situations.  Each UPD officer has received this training.   Four members of the UPD have also been through basic SWAT training class.
  • The UPD participates in a mutual aid agreement with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) and JSO has met with the UPD to review the campus and our emergency response plan.
  • The UPD also meets regularly with the Duval County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and is included in all updates and information coming from the EOC.
  • All UPD members and core members of the CMT have completed the basic National Incident Management System (NIMS) training.  All UPD command staff have also completed advanced Incident Command System training.

The UNF Crisis Management Team would like to encourage you to do your part by reviewing the Emergency Response Plan for Faculty, Staff, and Students at: http://www.unf.edu/dept/ehs/ and report any suspicious activity to the UPD at 620-2800.

CODE RED For Students:

Beginning this summer semester, students who want to register for classes at UNF must supply an emergency phone number or they must opt out of supplying the information.  By entering a telephone number when you register, the University will send you an automatic voicemail when an urgent situation on campus arises.  The University will ask you for an updated phone number every semester you register at UNF.

In order to collect this important information, a registration hold will be placed on your account. To remove this hold, please visit MyWings and click on Registration Status. Once you are on the Hold screen, you will be given a link that will take you to the Campus Alert System.  You may also access the Campus Alert System by selecting it from the Personal Information menu. When you complete and submit the Campus Alert System form, the hold will be automatically lifted.
