Leadership UNF

Leadership UNF Class 2005“A leadership development initiative for the future of UNF”

LeadershipUNF brings together a class of 10 full-time UNF employees who meet regularly throughout the fall and spring semesters, expanding their knowledge about the University and its various operations, as well as gaining a broader perspective on the issues facing higher education throughout Florida. Participants build stronger communication and leadership skills and have an opportunity to use their collective abilities to improve the University environment. At the end of the program, LeadershipUNF participants will have established close cross-divisional connections and improved their own sense of job satisfaction. They will also have developed the knowledge and skills to enable them to assume increasing leadership roles and function more effectively in their current or future positions at UNF.

What topics are covered?

LeadershipUNF afforded me the pleasure to enhance my leadership skills; as well as participate in a project that is cross-divisional and beneficial to the campus university.  It allowed me to gain insight and information valuable to assist me in my growth at the University and to connect with other LeadershUNF Class Members. Andre House, Systems Programming Manager, Auxiliary ServicesTopics will highlight current and future issues facing UNF. The general format will be workshops with presentations by University and government officials covering a broad range of topics. Depending on the topic, sessions are scheduled for a half day or a full day for a total of six sessions during the academic year. The sessions will be conducted on and off campus.

Will I be expected to travel?

One of the highlights of the program is an overnight trip to Tallahassee during the regular state legislative session. Participants will meet area lawmakers, see the Legislature in action and concentrate on higher education issues.

What else is involved?

With LeadershipUNF, I learned more about the University in eight months than I did in seven years as a UNF employee. This class helped me realize that to be an effective leader we should combine essential leadership traits with our own individual strengths. Alison Cruess, Communications Coordinator, Information Technology ServicesEach LeadershipUNF class will select a special project. With approval by the University president, participants will work together to complete a broad-based project that crosses University divisional lines. The project is designed to engage participants in a project beyond individual department boundaries.

Who can apply and how are participants selected?

I expected to learn a lot about UNF that might otherwise hard to obtain, and I was right. What I didn't expect was how much I learned about myself and my place within the larger UNF community. It's easier to make a difference than I realized. Dr. Michael Lentz, Associate Professor, Department of BiologyAll full-time UNF employees are eligible to apply with the approval of their immediate supervisor or department chair, the dean or director of their unit, and their divisional vice president. From the pool of eligible applicants, the President’s executive staff will select a class of 10 participants. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a commitment to UNF and its success. This will be demonstrated through written responses on an application form and a personal interview. Participants will be selected on the basis of ability, leadership potential and demonstrated interest in UNF.

How do I apply?

An online application can be found at www.unf.edu/unfinfo/leadership. In addition to the application form, applicants are requested to submit a current resume. All applications must be submitted to the President’s Office by 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2006.
