THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA

The University of North Florida in Jacksonville is one of the 10 publicly funded institutions of higher learning in Florida. Nestled within a beautiful nature area, this comprehensive urban university has more than 11,400 students and offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. UNF opened for classes in 1972 as an upper-level university. In 1984 UNF admitted its first freshman class, followed by sophomores in 1985. In 1997 the University marked its first quarter century of providing quality undergraduate and graduate education while playing a vital role in the cultural, economic and civic life of Florida's northeast region.

MARKS OF EXCELLENCE


* UNF was listed among the top 100 best college buys in the United States according to the 1997-98 issue of The student Guide to America's 100 Best College Buys, compiled by Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc.
* Student body enrollment includes 91 Achievement, National Merit and Hispanic scholars, which is an increase over last year.
* Celebrating its 11th anniversary, UNF's Jazz Program continues to be nationally recognized. The UNF Jazz Ensemble recently performed at the most prestigious jazz festival in the world, the 1997 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
* UNF is home to the Institute of Police Technology and Management, one of the premier police training organizations in the nation, which annually trains more than 12,000 law enforcement officers.
* UNF has established a reputation for outstanding international programs including the Study Abroad and International Exchange program and master's in education program available in Belize.
* Pathways to Success, a $10 million scholarship initiative started in 1997, offers high school seniors from inner-city neighborhoods an opportunity to complete a college education and improve their quality of life. The public-private partnership initiative has been hailed as a vital component in the city's efforts to expand educational opportunities for Jacksonville's youth.
* UNF boasts four team National Championships -- men's golf NAIA Champions in 1991 & 1993, women's tennis NAIA Champions in 1986 and women's tennis NCAA Division II Champions in 1994. The University also features nationally ranked teams in baseball, men's and women's tennis and cross country, and women's volleyball.
 

A QUARTER CENTURY OF PROGRESS

During 1997 the University of North Florida celebrated 25 years of academic excellence and progress. A number of outstanding events marked the celebration including an Anniversary Gala with a performance by public radio host Karl Haas, and public lectures by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel and world renowned author Maya Angelou as part of the Presidential Lecture Series. Last year also had its share of academic accomplishments: the UNF Robotics Team won the 1997 IEEE Southeastcon Robotics Competition; the UNF Jazz Ensemble performed at the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland; and the University's first master's in nursing program was approved for the College of Health. As the new millennium approaches, the University of North Florida maintains its winning tradition of academic excellence and strong community involvement.

COLLEGES OF DISTINCTION

ARTS AND SCIENCES
* Grants in the College last year totaling more than $1.2 million from prestigious sources such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, provide excellent opportunities for creativity and discovery by faculty and students.
* The Department of Music's Jazz Program draws outstanding musicians, including Ellis Marsalis, the Count Basie Band, and Thelonious Monk who perform and teach as visiting faculty.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
* From a new state-of-the-art, $7.8 million facility, the College of Business Administration will continue to offer its award-winning programs in accounting and the area's first fully accredited weekend MBA program.
* The college now offers two new fields of study -- financial services and international business -- to better serve the growing needs of the North Florida region.
COMPUTING SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING
* The UNF Robotics Team won the 1997 IEEE Southeastcon Robotics Competition held at VPI in Blacksburg, Va.
* Two new programs in civil engineering and mechanical engineering are currently in the planning stages.
EDUCATION AND HUMAN SERVICES
The college is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, one of the 11 teacher education programs in Florida to hold this distinction. All teacher certification programs in the college are approved by the Florida Department of Education.
* Programs in the college combine academic rigor and experiential learning. Most program include practical and field-based experiences. In teacher preparation program, these field experiences are developed and culminate in a semester-long teaching internship.
* Over the years College alumni have been selected as Teacher of the Year throughout districts in North Florida. Among these is Grace Williams, Florida's Teacher of the Year for 1997.
HEALTH
* More than 90 percent of graduates in nursing, physical therapy and nutrition passed their licensure or registration exams and became licensed to practice in their disciplines on their first attempt last year.
* The college has established the Genesis Health Distinguished Professorship to recruit and retain outstanding senior faculty members in the areas of nursing, physical therapy, athletic training and rehabilitation counseling.


PRIVATE SUPPORT AT UNF

Contributions received by the University of North Florida in FY 1996-97 total $8,426,289, representing a 345 percent increase for the previous year. Of that amount, $8,331,909 was received through the UNF Foundation Inc., the University s 501(c)(3) organization. As of Dec. 31, 1997, total assets of the Foundation reached $62 million, with an endowment valued at more than $23 million.

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF UNF

The University of North Florida is among the 30 largest employers in the greater Jacksonville area, providing jobs to 2,000 full-time and part-time workers. UNF has a direct economic impact of more than $250 million into the area's economy each year. For every dollar UNF spends, another $4.17 of economic activity is generated, according to a 1997-98 State University System study.

* UNF's scenic campus is nestled among 1,000 acres which includes a nature and wildlife preserve with lakes and nature trails. This beautiful woodland is used for scientific research and has been the site for the annual Envirothon for local schools.
* The campus encompasses 23 major buildings with nearly 1.7 million square feet of space.
* With the completion of the $11.5 million, 95,000-square-foot University Center in late 1998, the University will have a dedicated facility for the Division of Continuing Education as well as an educational center for use by the surrounding community. It will also house the Small Business Development Center, Institute of Police Technology and Management, Institute of Local Government and the Florida Institute of Education.
* As the first phase of a $15 million project to provide office, classroom, studio and lab space for the Communication & Visual Arts and Music programs, the Fine and Performing Arts Complex will begin construction in late 1998.
* At a cost of $9 million, Osprey Cove, UNF's most recent addition to campus housing, has added 450 more beds bringing the total number of students living on campus to about 1,600.
* As a new $7 million parking garage is finished in the fall of 1999, approximately 1,000 new spaces will be available on campus.

MORE FACTS

* The Division of Continuing Education, which provides more than 500 programs to the community each year, enrolled 12,897 participants in 1997.
* The 285-acre First Coast Technology Park adjoins the main campus and is available for commercial development.
* The National Alumni Association maintains contact with 27,000 alumni through five regional chapters in the Southeast and its first international chapter in Belize.
